Craigdarroch Castle .. Haunted House ?

Craigdarroch Castle was built in the 1890s for wealthy coal baron, Robert Dunsmuir and his wife Joan. Piano music in the ballroom and the smell of candles have been detected. The ghost of Joan Dunsmuir has been sighted in her bedroom. For some reason, only in winter, the apparition of a woman dressed in white has been seen in the ballroom window.

Craigdarroch Castle is an example of a "bonanza castle", massive houses built for men who became wealthy because of the industrial transformation of North America.

The attention to detail gives the interior of Craigdarroch a warmth throughout and many of the rooms incorporate exotic woods such as walnut, jarra, rosewood, maple, holly, and oak.

Craigdarroch Castle also boasts some of the finest residential stained and leaded glass in North America.

Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria, British Columbia, is a historic, Victorian-era Châteauesque mansion comprising 39 rooms and over 20,000 square feet (1,900 m2). It was constructed in the 1890s as a family residence for the wealthy coal baron Robert Dunsmuir and his wife Joan. Robert died in April 1889, more than a year before construction on the castle was completed. His sons Alexander and James took over the role of finishing the castle after his death. The initial architect of the castle, Warren Williams, also died before completion of the castle .
