After experiencing the coldest temperatures I have ever camped in, I decided to summit the eureka dunes in the pre-dawn light. At 14 degrees F, it was pretty hard to get out of my sleeping bag. Once we reached the top of the dunes, the panoramic view made the entire ordeal worth it. Most striking was the first light illuminating the southern portion of the dunes.

A massive thunderstorm builds up near zabriskie point in Death Valley. I shot from this vantage point until black clouds and distant thunder over the funeral mountains told me to be on my way.

High altitude clouds, invisible to the naked eye, move above mono lake deep in the night.

I arrived here late at night on my way to las vegas. With no other cars in the parking lot for the south tufa, I put on my headlamp and walked into the eerie mineral labrynth. There are some places out there that are just better to experience alone. As I watched meteors streaking across the sky, listened to the water lap up against the shore, the cackle of coyotes in the distance, I decided that this is definitely one of those places.

From a long and lonely drive into the great basin. Outside of death valley, the sun projects its last touch of light underneath a massive thunderstorm. Moments after I took this, lightning began to arc across the sky.

A quick trip to the eastern Sierra this weekend. I came back to visit this amazing grove of aspens in Lundy canyon for the second time. This area is so dense with aspens, in peak season, the ground is completely covered by yellow falling leaves. A truly magical place to be this time of year.

A long dead bristlecone pine catches the first light of sunrise in the white mountains. This spot had one of the most spectacular views I have ever seen. Hundreds of miles of towering Sierra peaks rising up from the Owens Valley. A view this tree sees every morning.

Everyone is starting to upload Autumn photos in anticipation of the coming season. I thought I would join the party with this image I took last year in Lundy Canyon while backpacking with my good friend. It was frigid at night, into the high teens. It was worth it though- we got to see some of the most beautiful aspens in California in different shades of light throughout the day and into the evening.

I love this photo, but I completely neglected to post in on flickr for some reason. In fact, I have this one hanging on my wall at home.

We backpacked into one of my favorite spots in the Sierra this weekend. One of my favorite spots, and yet I have never had weather that really made it stand out in photographs.

As we went on, scattered clouds turned to large cumulus thunder heads, then turned to overcast, and then a booming thunderstorm. The thunder was so loud it reverberated in my chest. We quickly set up camp and took shelter in our tents, rain pounding away on the granite around us.

After a few hours of watching the lightning, the clouds began to part. Just in time to catch the last light of day. An incredible day in one of my favorite places in the world. It was a good weekend.

I took this photo in Yosemite valley back in March during a late winter snow storm. As I stood here, lingering mist around the valley began to clear out. I could just barely start to make out yosemite falls from this distance. I decided to frame the obscured falls next to this snow covered tree.

As a side note, I just want to say that summer, at least in the central valley of California, is my least favorite season. It's been over 95 degrees for days on end in my apartment with barely working air conditioning. So for now I am looking at this tree with envy.

Corn Lilly Curves

I photographed these corn lillies in California's desolation wildnerness earlier this summer. Nearly everyone who has ventured to the mountains in the spring our summer has walked by these plants. With their sweeping curves and lines they make a great subject for photography, but because of their tendency to grow in moist areas they often signal an impending swarm of mosquitoes.

I was so tired after hiking up to this point. After we got up to the top and set up camp, I set my alarm for 11:30PM and went right to bed. As I hiked out to this lookout point under the stars, the moon rose over the distant mountains and illuminated the towering cliffs over Minaret lake in the Ansel Adams WIlderness.

Here is one of the many photos I have neglected sharing from my road trip to Utah back in April. This natural arch in the Escalante wilderness was incredible to see. It was easily over 100 feet high and provided a nice window to watch the passing clouds.

Lake Aloha sits below Pyramid peak in Desolation Wilderness, CA. More of a subtle sunset, but it was relaxing to watch it all unfold. Now I am looking forward to another trip to Ansel Adams wilderness next weekend. Stay tuned! Check this one out on black, its much better!

The oh-so-ironic Lake Aloha in California's Desolation Wilderness. Despite the raw and unforgiving appearance of this area, I found a powerful kind of calming energy to it as I sat and watched the sunset turn into a starry night.
