Beatrice Kerr her sister and three children

Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons posted a photo:

This black and white photograph features Beatrice Kerr (right), her sister and three small children at the beach.

This image is part of an archive series consisting of photographs relating to the career of champion Australian swimmer, diver and vaudeville entertainer in Australia and the United Kingdom Beatrice Kerr. The photographs depict Kerr diving and posing in swimsuits, a ange of swimming pools or piers, and feature her family and acquaintances.

Beatrice Maude Kerr (like rival Annette Kellerman and contemporaries Fanny Durack and Mina Wylie) was an exemplar of the fit modern woman in the early 1900s at a time when the physical culture movement was growing. In particular the sport of swimming was becoming very popular, yet it was still a novelty in many communities in Australia, North America and in the UK where Kerr subsequently toured demonstrating her prowess.

Kerr had a fastest swimming time of 1 minute 21.4 seconds for the 100 yards (91.4 m) and 27.5 minutes for the mile (1.6 km). Although Kerr did not hold world records or swim at the Olympics like Fanny Durack and Mina Wylie she was highly regarded as a swimmer and entertainer and inspired many young women to take to the water.
Harry B Williams and friends at the seaside

This photograph depicts a group of men and women at the seaside. Harry Brisbane Williams, photographer for the NSW Water Board and amateur artist is on the far right, with his camera under his arm. Artist Alfred Coffey (1869 - 1950) is third from the right.

This image is part of a collection of photos by Harry Brisbane Williams. The Williams photographic collection provides an interesting record of a range of activities on Sydney Harbour from the 1890s into the 1920s. An enthusiastic amateur boater and photographer, Williams’ photographs capture a range of subjects – pleasure cruising on his motor launch on the Lane Cove River, yachting on Sydney Harbour, foreshore social activities, surf lifesaving, cargo ships, battle cruisers of the United States fleet, model yachting and the shipbuilding industry. In particular, they are a wonderful personal record of the new phenomenon of leisure motor boating in the early twentieth century.
