On 23 July 1925, Sydney hosted eight of the US Navy Battle Fleet's largest ships. On 28 July, Governor Dudley de Chair and Lady Enid de Chair hosted the Vice-Regal Garden Party in their honour at Government House grounds in the Royal Botanic Gardens. The Governor and his wife are pictured here (centre) greeting a high ranking United States naval officer, possibly Captain Hart of USS MISSISSIPPI. To the far right is their daughter, Elaine de Chair. Other guests of honour were United States Admiral Samuel Shelburne Robison and his wife.

Over 3,000 people reportedly attended the party, which was a casual event with no formal reception and tennis games for the younger attendees. One United States naval officer spoke at the ceremony, exclaiming:

'"It's just wonderful - the view, the crowd, and the weather. One could get nothing better in the world.
Not even in California."'

This photograph was possibly taken at this event.

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.

On 23 July 1925, Sydney hosted eight of the US Navy Battle Fleet's largest ships. This photograph depicts members of the United States Naval Patrol at the Orient Line Company's wharf in East Circular Quay. They are standing in front of the Citizens' Welcome Canteen which was set up as a free service by the Citizens' Welcome Committee. 'The Sydney Morning Herald' reported on the canteen's purpose in the lead up to the visit:

'Sydney has a reputation world-wide, for hospitality. The committee for the citizens' welcome has secured the ideal accommodation at the landing stage at Circular Quay, where our guests may obtain refreshments, may rest, write letters, and play games.'
SMH, 15 July 1925, p. 14

'The first view the American sailors will get of Australian womanhood will be at the old Orient Company's wharf, where they will be welcomed by the Citizens' Welcome Canteen. More than 500 ladies are giving their services over the period of the fleet's visit to Sydney to assist in entertaining the men.'
