Boy you put me on the spot I don't know what to say
But I'm trying anyway
Like my hearts gonna drop
My mind drifts away and I can't control the pains

Words are spinning in my head
Don't know why I'm holding back
I should just tell you how I'm feeling yeah heh

But I don't wanna act a fool
Don't wanna look confused
If I let you know about the way I feel
Don't know what you gonna do
So I keep it locked inside
And imagine you were mine
And I'm feeling you so close but yet so far
You hold the key to my heart

The more I brush it off
Tell myself it's nothing at all
Deeper I fall
And I imagine everyday
A thousand different ways
How you respond to what I say

Am I getting lost in my dreams?
Are you unreachable to me?
Cause these butterflies just won't go away

I don't wanna act a fool
Don't wanna look confused
If I let you know about the way I feel
Don't know what you gonna do
So I keep it locked inside
And imagine lyricsmusicvideo.blogspot.com you were mine
And I'm feeling you so close but yet so far
You hold the key to my heart

But if I never tell you then you'll never know
And the secret is get-ting heavy to hold
This is more than just a crush
So I may stut-ter when I speak
And my knees may get a little weak
But I've got nothing to lose and only you to gain
Tell me do you feel the same

But I don't wanna act a fool
Don't wanna look confused
If I let you know about the way I feel

Whats your favourite colour on the roulette wheel?

Roulette is a casino game named after a French diminutive for "little wheel". In the game, players may choose to place bets on either a single number or a range of numbers, the colors red or black, or whether the number is odd or even.

A legend tells François Blanc supposedly bargained with the devil to obtain the secrets of roulette. The legend is based on the fact that the sum of all the numbers on the roulette wheel (from 1 to 36) is 666, which is the "Number of the Beast".

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here

An ipod track that I ripped from a red vinyl single from my loft. Japan came out of Catford, South London. They were often associated with the 'New Romantic' movement, but the band were far more sophisticated than this narrow definition.

Band members David Sylvian (Vox), Richard Barbieri (Keyboards), Mick Karn (Bass), Sylvian's brother Steve Jansen (percussion). Later Rob Dean joined playing guitar.

The band debuted on record with the 1978 album 'Adolescent Sex' from which this track was taken. It was followed up with 'Obscure Alternatives'. Both albums sold well in Japan (where the band's name helped them to gain a devoted cult following) and Holland, where the single "Adolescent Sex" was a Top 30 hit. They also gained some popularity in Canada. Unfortunately in their native UK those albums were largely ignored.

Though influenced by artists such as the New York Dolls, Roxy Music and David Bowie, both albums were widely dismissed by the UK music press as being distinctly outmoded at a time when punk and New Wave bands were in ascendence. The band were managed by Simon Napier-Bell who has also managed The Yardbirds, Marc Bolan, London and Wham!. Check out www.simonnapierbell.com for a quick tour of his world or his book 'Black Vinyl, White Powder' a recommended rollercoaster ride through the most interesting 20 years of UK music.

1979's Quiet Life, heralded a significant change towards a more electronic sound. Their final two studio albums, Gentlemen Take Polaroids (1980) and Tin Drum (1981), were released on the Virgin label, and continued to expand their audience as the band refined its new sound and, somewhat unintentionally, became associated with the early-1980s New Romantic movement. Tin Drum in particular is critically regarded as one of the most innovative albums of the 1980s, with its startlingly original fusion of occidental and oriental sounds, and peaked just outside the UK Top 10. Its unconventional single "Ghosts" reached no 5 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Japan's biggest domestic hit.

Japan's last ever performance was on 16 December 1982 in Nagoya, Japan. The band's final Hammersmith concerts were recorded to produce Oil On Canvas, a live album and video released in June 1983. This is a good starting point if you woul dlike to get to know the band. Tell 'em I sent you!

------------------------

To avoid controversy over the title, the album was renamed 'Japan' in some countries' Any controversy in this image should be rooted in the mind of the beholder.

A track to enjoy with a drink in your hand or a bar of quality chocolate, this one.

The word "morcheeba" is meant to indicate "the way of cannabis". This originated from "MOR"(middle of the road) plus "Cheeba" (informal name of cannabis).

Morcheeba mix pop, hip-hop, rock and electronica and are based in the UK. They have consisted of Paul & Ross Godfrey, Skye Edwards and recently Daisy Martey, among many guests. Their debut album 'Who Can You Trust?' on China Records was released in April 1996.

This track comes from 'Big Calm' the second album which was more mainstream and pop-ey.

This is a great track from a very under-rated artist. She spent some time in (Kurt Cobain ex Courtney Love's) Hole and in her younger years at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec as a photography major. Melissa Auf Der Maur has dual US & Canadian citizenship and speaks both English and French.

In 2004, Melissa released her first solo effort Auf der Maur, garnering airplay on modern rock radio stations for the singles "Followed the Waves," "Real a Lie" and "Taste You. The same year, she appeared on the CBC television program The Greatest Canadian, as David Suzuki's celebrity advocate. Auf der Maur was part of the November 2004 "Love Metal" tour also featuring HIM and 2004's Curiosa. She was also the opening act for Matthew Good's "Put Out Your Lights" tour in 2004, as well as for The Offspring's Splinter tour in 2004.

Auf der Maur is also an experienced photographer. She was a photography major specializing in self-portraiture at Concordia University when she was invited to join Hole in 1994. Her photos have been published in Nylon, Bust, Mastermind, and American Photo, among other magazines. Her photos were also in the exhibition The Kids are Alright at Sotheby's in New York City along with photos by Yelena Yemchuk.

She put together a solo exhibition in 2001, under the name of Channels. It mostly featured shots of Auf der Maur's life on the road, with a recurring TV theme and shots of hotel TV screens, hence the name Channels. The exhibition opened September 9, 2001, at Brooklyn's Secret Gallery, but was shut down after the September 11 attacks

------------------------

Alluring mistresses in stone tempt us from the past and we certainly reproduce it in-finitum for our gardens and mantlepieces. Erotic fresco painting from Pompeii and Roman poetry is the main basis for (mis)information about adulterous Roman wives or glamorous mistresses. Propertius (who flourished 30-20 BC), Tibullus (48-19 BC) and Ovid (43 BC-AD 17) wrote love poems in the first person, each about a named mistress, following the lead of Catullus (c.84-54 BC), who had written short lyric poems about 'Lesbia'. These poems are set in a kind of fantasy world, and had a great influence on later European poetry.

Scholars have speculated that the 'Lesbia' he addressed in some poems was the elegant widow Clodia, who was attacked by the orator Cicero in court (in his defence of Caelius, 56 BC) for her loose living. The second-century satirist Juvenal devoted his longest poem to the horrors of marriage. It is a gallery of awful married women whose vices (such as body-building and correcting their husbands' grammar) include committing adultery with men, women and even donkeys! It's racy reading, but not exactly reportage.

In short, little is accurately known. Dont believe all you see in Dobbies....

Whatever happened to Pulp?

Pulp were an indy band formed in Sheffield way back in 1978. They split in 2002, they were Jarvis Cocker (vox & guitar), the lovely Candida Doyle (keyboards), Mark Webber (guitar), Steve Mackey (bass), Nick Banks (drums) and Richard Hawley (guitar, backing vox).

Fame was slow, finally arriving with the 'Different Class' album in 1995, which reached the number one spot in the UK Albums Chart. Different Class spawned four top 10 singles, including "Common People" and "Sorted for E's & Wizz", both of which reached number two in the UK Singles Chart.

Pulp's musical style during this period consisted of disco influenced pop-rock coupled with "kitchen sink drama"-style lyrics. Jarvis Cocker and the band became major figures in the Britpop movement, and were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 1994 for His 'n' Hers; they won the prize in 1996 for Different Class. They headlined the Pyramid Stage of the Glastonbury Festival. In 1996 I saw them at the V festival with Elastica, Cast & Gary Numan.

The song is about those who were perceived by the songwriter as wanting to be "like common people" and who ascribe glamour to poverty. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as slumming or "class tourism".

The inspiration for the song came from a Greek fellow student, Ambrosia Sakkadas, Pulp singer/songwriter Jarvis Cocker knew at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Taking this inspiration, the narrator explains that his female acquaintance can "never be like common people", because even if she gets a flat where "roaches climb the wall" ultimately, "if [she] called [her] dad he could stop it all", in contrast to the true common people who can only "watch [their] lives slide out of view". In his lyric Cocker embellished the situation for dramatic effect - in real life the woman in question said she "wanted to move to Hackney and live like 'the common people'", but in the song her character also declares: "I want to sleep with common people like you.".

The chorus melody apparently has similarities to the ELP track 'Fanfare for the Common Man'. To totally mash your head up, click here to hear the William Shatner cover version.

------------------------

Its often said that in the UK most news stories are fundamentally about class, while in the states they are generally about race. I am certain there is an element of truth in this.

From a sociological point of view the class system in Britain changed substantially during the 'Thatcher Era'. Home ownership (on mortgage) was extended throughout the middle classes and below. With the loss of the majority of traditional working class industrial jobs from the market, a new 'underclass', below working class emerged. The 'underclass', defined as unemployed relying on state benefits, is the new bottom of the British class system.

In Britain people considered of lower social standing can earn high incomes, but an individual's social class is still largely assessed by their parent's mannerisms, education etc. People watching late evening in any Uk city can tell a lot about people.

Perhaps if people could afford it, they would have been collected by their butler or manservent, or boarded a taxi, rather than wait for the 86 First Buses Charlotte Square service to Birkendale.

Its clean and cheap and theres one every half an hour. Unfortunately, I had given my domestics that evening off, so I joined them myself after snapping off this five shot 180 degree joiner.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here

Joy Division were a Manchester post-punk band formed in 1976 in Salford, England. Originally named Warsaw. It consisted of Ian Curtis (vox), Barney or Bernard Sumner (Guitar/Keyboards/Occasional Bass), Peter Hook (Bass/Backing Vocals/Occasional guitar) and Steve Morris (Percussion).

I came across them first supporting JCC (John Cooper Clark) at the Manchester Free Trade Hall Monday 25th June 1979. That day is etched on my mind as it was a mind-blowing event for me, seeing Ian Curtis and the powerful presence he had on that stage. I dont think a band has had that effect on me since and I have seen probably thousands of live gigs.

I bought Joy Division's debut album, 'Unknown Pleasures' the day it was released, in its special textured cover, then promptly played it to death. The original LP release contained no track information on the labels, nor the traditional "side one" and "side two" designations. The ostensible "side one" was labeled Outside and displayed a reproduction of the image on the album cover, while the other side was labeled Inside and displayed the same image with the colours reversed (black-on-white). Track information and album credits appeared on the inner sleeve only.

This single 'Love will tear us apart' appeared after teh release of the second album Closer. It debuted when the band supported Buzzcocks on their UK tour in September and October 1979. It is one of the few songs in which singer Ian Curtis played guitar (albeit somewhat minimally). The lyrics ostensibly reflect the problems in Ian Curtis's marriage to Deborah Curtis, as well as his general frame of mind in the time leading up to his suicide in May 1980. Deborah Curtis had the phrase "Love Will Tear Us Apart" inscribed on Ian Curtis's memorial stone.

It appears on the Substance compilation album. It was first recorded for a John Peel session in November 1979, then re-recorded in January 1980 and March 1980. It is the latter version that appears on Substance. The January 1980 version originally appeared as the single's B-side.

In 1995, to publicise the release of Permanent, the track was reissued, complete with a new remix done by Arthur Baker and a new radio edit, also known as the Permanent Mix. On September 24, 2007 (2007-09-24), the single was again reissued, in its original configuration. This time, it was to publicise the Collector's Edition re-issues of the band's three albums. Although the single was now issued on the Warner label, it retained all the classic Factory packaging, down to the FAC 23 catalogue number.

It has been covered by the world and his wife, including U2, Arcade Fire, The Cure and others. On the video for the song, at the very beginning, the door that swings open and shut has the initials of the band members carved into it. The video was shot by the band themselves as they recorded the song.

It includes production errors with colour being 'browned out' at some points. Due to another production error the vocals as sung by Curtis during the video didn't come out as intended. The song as originally recorded in the video sounds much more like that in their Peel Session. Curtis re-recorded the vocals separately with the hint of melancholy that helps make it distinctive. The oddly-shaped guitar played by Ian Curtis is a Vox Phantom (Often wrongly believed to be the Vox Mark III).

To learn more about JD, track down the 'Substance' compilation and the book 'Touching From A Distance' by Deborah Curtis. The devout Joy Division fan Anton Corbijn film 'Control' is a great starting point for getting to know the bands history. Tell 'em I sent you :-)

"Walk on the Wild Side" is a Lou Reed song from his 1972 David Bowie produced second solo album Transformer. It namechecks taboo topics such as transsexuality, drugs, male prostitutes and oral sex and the term "colored" to refer to African Americans, a term which was still common in that era.

The lyrics tell of a series of individuals and their journeys to New York City, and refers to several of the regular "superstars" at Andy Warhol's New York studio, The Factory, namely Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, Joe Dallesandro, Jackie Curtis and Joe Campbell (referred to in the song by his nickname Sugar Plum Fairy). Candy Darling was also the subject of Reed's song "Candy Says".

The saxophone solo played over the fadeout of the song was performed by Ronnie Ross, who had previously taught David Bowie to play the saxophone during Bowie's childhood. It has been heavily covered by Echo and the Bunnymen and The Strokes to name a few.

I picked up on Reed after an introduction to the VU.

I was a late convert to the Dandy's and their friends/enemies The BJM who I saw live recently.
The band's name is a pun on the name of American pop artist Andy Warhol and originate from Portland, Oregon in 1993. Influences include The Velvet Underground, the Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones.

The band first achieved success in the UK after the release of their second Album 'The Dandy Warhols Come Down' in 1997. The promotional video for this single "Not If You Were The Last Junkie on Earth" was directed by celebrity fashion photographer David LaChapelle, and it earned them acclaim outside the US.

Along with The Brian Jonestown Massacre (BJM), The Dandy Warhols were the subjects of the 2004 documentary DiG! This film captured a love-hate relationship between both bands, highlighting the interaction of BJM frontman Anton Newcombe and Courtney Taylor. It was recorded over the course of seven years by Ondi Timoner, and won the Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.

To get a bit of background to both bands you could do worse than grab this DVD. tell 'em I sent you!

------------------------

The illegal drug trade is a global black market, competing with legal drug trade, dedicated to cultivation, manufacture, distribution and sale of those substances which are subject to drug prohibition laws. Most jurisdictions prohibit trade, except under license, of many types of drugs by drug prohibition laws.

A UN report said the global drug trade generated an estimated US$321.6 billion in 2003. With a world GDP of US$36 trillion in the same year, the illegal drug trade may be estimated as slightly less than 1% of total global commerce. Consumption of illegal drugs is widespread globally.

Cocaine (benzoylmethylecgonine) is a crystalline tropane alkaloid that is obtained from the leaves of the coca plant. The name comes from "coca" in addition to the alkaloid suffix -ine, forming cocaine. It is a stimulant of the central nervous system, an appetite suppressant, and a topical anesthetic.

For over a thousand years South American indigenous peoples have chewed the leaves of Erythroxylon coca, a plant that contains vital nutrients as well as numerous alkaloids, including cocaine. The coca leaf was, and still is, chewed almost universally by some indigenous communities.

The remains of coca leaves have been found with ancient Peruvian mummies, and pottery from the time period depicts humans with bulged cheeks, indicating the presence of something on which they are chewing. There is also evidence that these cultures used a mixture of coca leaves and saliva as an anesthetic for the performance of trepanation.

When the Spanish arrived in South America, most at first ignored aboriginal claims that the leaf gave them strength and energy, and declared the practice of chewing it the work of the Devil. But after discovering that these claims were true, they legalized and taxed the leaf, taking 10% off the value of each crop.

In 1569, Nicolás Monardes described the practice of the natives of chewing a mixture of tobacco and coca leaves to induce "great contentment".

Crack is a lower purity form of free-base cocaine and contains sodium bicarbonate as impurity. Freebase and crack are often administered by smoking. The origin of the name is from the crackling sound (hence the onomatopoeic “crack”) produced when cocaine containing impurities are heated.

The trade north of drugs and south of cash and weapons continues in the Americas regardless of prohibition, cival and military enforcement. As I type this I am listening to the story of dead bodies found near San Fernando in Mexico,Tamaulipas state, the corpses are reportedly those of 58 men and 14 women. It appears to be among the biggest mass graves linked to drug cartel violence to be uncovered in Mexico.

365-359 Grantham Guildhall Arts Centre at Night, Lincolnshire, UK

HotpixUK -Add Me On Ipernity 500px posted a photo:

The now arts centre, original guildhall and jail on St Peter’s Hill in Grantham was commissioned in 1866 by Mayor Thomas Winter after criminal Jesse Dale, who was serving 15 years for stealing, twice walked out of the town’s original jail in 1864.

This original Guildhall and jail building stood on the corner of Guildhall Street and High Street and dated from 1787. After Jesse’s second escape, the governor at the time William Mayer was sacked and a government inspector condemned the building. The inmates had to be sent to Lincoln. The site of the demolished Guildhall was bought by the Stamford, Boston and Spalding Bank (later Barclays) and is now home to the Goose at the Bank pub. To set the scene, a visitor to beerinthe evening described it thus: "Usually one cask beer available. This pub seems to attract the local mongs and low-life. Tracksuits are a must!". "Knobcakes the lot of them"!

Back to the story, on the current Guildhall site was an old school – The Firs – housed in a former town house. This and the adjoining land were bought for £2,100. Lincoln architect William Watkins drew up the design for the new building and the work was carried out Mr Wartnaby, of Little Gonerby, for £7,260.

The original Guildhall was made up of three separate buildings - the main building which housed a ballroom and courtroom (or session’s hall), a governor’s residence and a jail for up to 18 men and women on two floors.

However, although it seemed no expense had been spared on the building, officers from the South Lincolnshire Militia were less than happy to find it was missing a certain facility when they booked to use the hall – a toilet. At this point, councillors agreed one should be installed to avoid further embarrassment.

The new Guildhall was also home to the four-sided clock which was the first time many of the town’s residents would have had the luxury of telling the time with any accuracy. It was this fact that coined the local phrase ‘under the clock’ meaning, ‘to appear in court’.

As late as 1930, publican Frank Milner of the Victoria Hotel, Commercial Road, was let off with a caution for serving out of hours because he set his time by the clock which was, and still is, a little slow.

In 1882 an area of the building was leased to cigar makers Robinson and Barnsdale and 15 years later, to the Grantham Technical Institute. Staff who work at the Guildhall today are convinced it is home to a cigar-smoking ghost as, on occasions, the strong smell of cigar smoke will appear in one or more rooms and then after a few minutes, disappear as quickly as it came.

In 1972, a dome replaced the original wrought ironwork over the clock tower and in 1974, the magistrates moved to the London Road, now home to Belvoir Property Management. In the same year, South Kesteven District Council was born and the Grantham Borough Council ceased to exist.

Apart from the Mayor’s Parlour, much of the building was redundant until 1991 when it was redesigned by Sleaford architect Tim Benton and re-opened as the council owned Guildhall Arts Centre at a cost of £1.2 million.

This renovation work saw the session’s hall transformed into the 210-seat theatre and the ballroom was redecorated to its former glory, with the main entrance being at the side of the building. The jail area was converted into the box office.

In 2010 an exciting refurbishment, saw the box office move to the front of the building and the grand victorian entrance being used once more, a new coffee shop was housed in the jail where the kitchen area is still referred to as ‘the back cell.’.

As can be seen it is tastefully illuminated at night, easily seen when avoiding the Goose at the bank!

?Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here

Mansun were formed in Chester, England in 1995 by Draper and King. The band's foundations were cemented with the addition of Chad, who worked behind the bar at the Fat Cat pub in Chester and they began rehearsing at Crash Rehearsal Studios in Liverpool, where the band would be discovered by a passing A&R man and offered a publishing contract.

The band were originally called "Grey Lantern" but changed their name to "Manson", after the cult leader Charles Manson but were forced to change it due to copyright issues. The band gave several false accounts of this at the time, one being that they were named after The Verve b-side "A Man Called Sun", and that "Manson" was simply a spelling mistake which accidentally went through to production. It was reported that Charles Manson had started spelling his name with a "U", to which Draper joked that perhaps they should sue him.

Early EPs were followed by the critically acclaimed album Attack Of The Grey Lantern which appeared to contain a conceptual storyline - heavily debated by fans - whilst ending with a hidden track (An Open Letter To The Lyrical Trainspotter, previously featured on Three EP) proclaiming sarcastically 'The lyrics aren't supposed to mean that much'. The band's debut LP knocked fellow Parlophone act Blur's 1997 self-titled album from the top spot of the British album chart. Radiohead are quoted as saying, at that year's Q Awards, that the album was "a real musical achievement". Draper stated that the lyrics from this era were written whilst when he was a kid and influenced by The Goon Show and Monty Python

------------------------

Lady Chatterley's Lover is a novel by D. H. Lawrence, first published in 1928. The first edition was printed in Florence, Italy; it could not be published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960. (A private edition was issued by Inky Stephensen's Mandrake Press in 1929).

The book soon became notorious for its story of the physical relationship between a working-class man and an aristocratic woman, its explicit descriptions of sex, and its use of (at the time) unprintable words.

The story is said to have originated from events in Lawrence's own unhappy domestic life, and he took inspiration for the settings of the book from Eastwood in Nottinghamshire where he grew up. According to some critics, the fling of Lady Ottoline Morrell with "Tiger", a young stonemason who came to carve plinths for her garden statues, also influenced the story.

Lawrence at one time considered calling the novel Tenderness and made significant alterations to the text and story in the process of its composition. It has been published in three different versions.

The story concerns a young married woman, Constance (Lady Chatterley), whose upper-class husband, Clifford Chatterley, has been paralyzed and rendered impotent. Her sexual frustration leads her into an affair with the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors. This novel is about Constance's realization that she cannot live with the mind alone; she must also be alive physically.

Even by chapter three Connie's jerking and twitching runs through her body like restlessness...
Seek it out, tell them I sent you!

I first heard this track on a free Q magazine compilation and that CD was stuck in my car for several months. Its one of my favourites and comes up quite a lot on my iPod.

PJ Harvey (born 9th October 1969) is an English musician and singer-songwriter. Raised in Corscombe, Dorset. She formed the band (calling it PJ Harvey) as a teenager with drummer Rob Ellis and bassist Ian Olliver, who was replaced with Steve Vaughan.

The trio released their first album Dry in 1992. Ellis and Vaughan left the band after the release of Rid of Me (1993), and Harvey continued as an acclaimed solo artist.

As Harvey embarked on her solo career, she explored collaborations with other musicians. To Bring You My Love (1995) was produced by Flood (Mark Ellis) and John Parish, and was a worldwide success, selling over one million copies, according to BPI.

A more bluesy record than its predecessors, it saw Harvey broadening her sonic palette to include strings, organ and synthesizers. It also generated a surprise modern rock radio hit with this single "Down by the Water". The album received a glowing critical response and ended up being voted Album of the Year by The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, USA Today, People, The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. Harvey was also voted Artist of the Year by Rolling Stone.

Offstage, Harvey has cultivated a reputation for eccentricity to match her music; for example, Steve Albini claimed she ate nothing but potatoes while making Rid of Me. Harvey describes herself as "an extremely quiet person, who doesn't go out much, doesn't talk to people", and rejects the notion that her songs are autobiographical. She told The Times in 1998, "The tortured artist myth is rampant. People paint me as some kind of black witchcraft-practising devil from hell, that I have to be twisted and dark to do what I am doing. It's a load of rubbish".

This is a track by a band who pop up regular on my iPod, The Cult. Fire woman was written by singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy. It was the first single released from their fourth studio album Sonic Temple. Its a steady fixture of the band's live performances.

The origins of the band can be traced back to 1981, in Bradford, Yorkshire, where vocalist and songwriter Ian Astbury formed a goth rock band called Southern Death Cult. The name was chosen with a double meaning, and was derived from the 14th century Native American religion, the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex or Southern Death Cult as it sometimes known, from the Mississippi delta area, but it was also a stab at what the band viewed was the centralisation of power in Southern England (including that of the music industry). As I know as a 'northerner' there has long been a perceived notion of a North-South divide based on social, historic and economic reasons.

The Cult's high water mark was in the late 1980's to early 1990's when hits like 'She Sells Sanctuary" stayed in the top 100 singles chart for 20 or more weeks. Since 1995 the band has split, reformed to tour, split again and recently toured the Love album (Love Live Tour). The band has officially announced the release of its first new studio recording since 2007, "Everyman and Woman is a Star". The new single is being released as a two-week exclusive through the iTunes store beginning this coming Saturday, July 31st 2010.

I remember discovering this on the Stanley Road album when Weller was being confirmed in Q etc as 'The Guvnor'. His Style Council days were thankfully by then behind him. This is pretty much a perfect album. Collaborations from Steve Winwood, Noel Gallagher and Steve Cradock of OCS (that's Ocean Colour Scene, not Office Cleaning Services in case you were wondering) pepper the album and (hope you like the link), the classic cover was designed by Peter Blake, designer of The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's album.

Paul Weller was actually born 'John William Weller' 25th May 1958, in Sheerwater, near Woking, Surrey. Weller was born into a working-class family. His father worked in the building trade as a scaffolder and a bricklayer, and his mother worked as a cleaner. Weller was brought up in Stanley Road, Woking in a Victorian council house, which had an outside toilet but neither hot running water nor central heating.

Woking is the town in which the Martians first land in H. G. Wells' science fiction novel The War of the Worlds. If you have ever been there you will realise why.
The Philharmonic Dining Rooms in Liverpool, England is situated on the junction of Hope Street and Hardman Street, diagonally opposite the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Locally it is referred to as the Philharmonic Pub or simply the Phil. Designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas for the brewers Robert Cain & Company, it opened in 1898. The exterior is in the Art Nouveau style.

As requested here is a shot of the famous Adament urinals. These can be visited by women by request. No trip to Liverpool is complete without a visit here. The architect of the Phil, and other pubs was Walter Thomas.

Vampires are mythological or folkloric beings who subsist by feeding on the life essence (generally in the form of blood) of living creatures, regardless of whether they are undead or a living person...

Although vampiric entities have been recorded in many cultures and according to speculation by literary historian Brian Frost that the "belief in vampires and bloodsucking demons is as old as man himself", and may go back to "prehistoric times", the term vampire was not popularized until the early 18th century, after an influx of vampire superstition into Western Europe from areas where vampire legends were frequent, such as the Balkans and Eastern Europe, although local variants were also known by different names, such as vampir (вампир) in Serbia and Bulgaria, vrykolakas in Greece and strigoi in Romania.

This increased level of vampire superstition in Europe led to mass hysteria and in some cases resulted in corpses actually being staked and people being accused of vampirism...While even folkloric vampires of the Balkans and Eastern Europe had a wide range of appearance ranging from nearly human to bloated rotting corpses, it was the success of John Polidori's 1819 The Vampyre that established the charismatic and sophisticated vampire of fiction as it is arguably the most influential vampire work of the early 19th century inspiring such works as Varney the Vampire and eventually Dracula..

However, it is Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula that is remembered as the quintessential vampire novel and which provided the basis of modern vampire fiction. Dracula drew on earlier mythologies of werewolves and similar imaginary demons and "was to voice the anxieties of an age", and the "fears of late Victorian patriarchy". ..

The success of this book spawned a distinctive vampire genre, still popular in the 21st century, with books, films, video games, and television shows. The vampire is such a dominant figure in the horror genre that literary historian Susan Sellers places the current vampire myth in the "comparative safety of nightmare fantasy"...NB:

The Victorian Gothic Guildhall on St Peters Hill and is home to many arts events from Grantham dramatic society. this included in 2006 Blackadder and in 2007 the classic Fawlty Towers (reminds me of a certain local hotel).

Edith Smith Way is the name of the road beside the Guildhall Arts Centre, on 'St Peter's Hill'; it is named after England's first policewoman. Miss Mary Allen and Miss Ellen F. Harburn reported for duty on the 'beat' on November 27, 1914, during the First World War.

The government had always opposed the idea of police women but with large numbers of policemen joining the British Army, it was considered a good idea to have women volunteers to help run the service. Another reason that Dawson's proposal was accepted was that her members were willing to work without pay

In February 1915 Dawson and Allen renamed her organisation, the Women's Police Service (WPS). At first the WPS concentrated its work in the London area. Wearing a dark-blue uniform, the WPS were assigned responsibilities such as looking after the welfare of refugees.

Later that year, Allen was sent to sort out problems in Grantham and Hull. Both towns had army camps and local people were complaining about drunken behaviour and a growth in prostitution.

Mary Allen was a former suffragette and had been previously arrested outside the House of Commons and later went on to be the commandant of the UK's women's police force from the 1920s up to 1940. She helped to set up women's police forces in other countries, including Germany. Edith Smith became the first female with powers of arrest in August 1915.

I wont mention that other 'lady of Grantham' I am sure I will find an excuse to post on that subject shortly!
365-362 Sleeping Beauty

The Sleeping Beauty Novels by Anne Rice (writing as A. N. Roquelaure). Best known for her gothic vampire stories and later religious-themed works, Rice is also the creator of a trilogy centered on Sleeping Beauty -- The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty; Beauty's Punishment; and, Beauty's Release.

Rice puts a strong emphasis on human desire and Beauty’s sexual awakening with these erotic, sometimes sadomasochistic, stories.

The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty (1983), Beauty's Punishment (1984), and Beauty's Release (1985) are erotic novels by Anne Rice writing under the pseudonym of A. N. Roquelaure. The trilogy was a bestseller, outearning Interview with the Vampire.

They are lengthy BDSM novels, reminiscent of Story of O, set in a medieval fantasy world based very loosely on the legend of Sleeping Beauty. The novels contain both maledom and femdom scenarios, as well as vivid imageries of bisexuality, ephebophilia and bestiality.

In this alternative racy adult orientated tale, Beauty is awakened from her hundred-year sleep by the Prince, not with a simple kiss, but with a deflowering, initiating her into a Satyricon-like world of sexual adventures. After stripping her naked he takes her to his kingdom, ruled by his mother, the Queen.

There Beauty is trained as a slave and a plaything. The rest of the naked slaves, dozens of them, in the Queen's palace are princes and princesses sent by their royal parents from the surrounding kingdoms as tributes. In this palace they spend several years learning to become obedient and submissive sexual property, accepting being spanked, being publicly displayed, crawling around on their hands and knees, servicing their masters and mistresses, until they return to their own lands "being enhanced in wisdom".

In the palace Beauty meets another slave, Prince Alexi, with whom she copulates passionately. After that he tells her the long adventurous journey he had in the palace. Alexi previously had been a stubborn prince who fought back all the attempts to break him, until the Queen sent him to the kitchen to get him tortured by crude kitchen servants.

The punishment Alexi received there was so savage and merciless he began to lose his senses and, after some particularly humiliating training at the hands of a strong stable boy, Alexi became a totally surrendered slave, playing various sexual games at the Queen's commands.

The moral of Alexi's story notwithstanding, Beauty fails to become an obedient plaything, and the book closes with her being sentenced to brutal slavery in the neighboring village along with other failed slaves.

So the moral of all this: 'Dont waste your life waiting for your prince to come'.

This couplet is one of Dorothy Parker's most famous poems, and is an excellent example of the succinct force of her wit. The poem in its entirety reads:

News Item
Men seldom make passes
At girls who wear glasses.

Dorothy Parker might be glad to know that in modern times, men frequently make passes at girls (and women) who wear glasses. I have certainly been there myself! In at least American culture, glasses tend to connote intelligence and often a certain degree of nerdiness to the unwary observer, and fortunately nowadays intelligence is more accepted, even valued, in women. So to some extent, the scales have tipped the other way such that to a fair degree the air-headed women on television and in movies are more often portrayed as the undesirable ones.

On the other hand, there is still a broad vein of anti-glasses sentiment in American culture. Consistently, in movies, talk shows, sitcoms, and ad campaigns that rely on someone going "from geek to goddess," women (and men) are put through a makeover process where the glasses are the first to go. For example, in the Disneyfication of The Princess Diaries, the commercials for the movie showed the main character losing her glasses to become a pretty pretty princess. (They also straightened her hair, which really requires its own acerbic couplet - or perhaps a seven-chapter epic poem.).

For many of course there are contact lenses, vision without the frames. The only problem I have witnessed is the spectacle of a woman removing one after a few too many drinks, then forgetting which eye has already had it removed. Tragic, yet funny at the same time - it made me smile anyway!

The history of smoking can be dated to as early as 5000 BC, and has been recorded in many different cultures across the world. Early smoking evolved in association with religious ceremonies; as offerings to deities, in cleansing rituals or to allow shamans and priests to alter their minds for purposes of divination or spiritual enlightenment.

After the European exploration and conquest of the Americas, the practice of smoking tobacco quickly spread to the rest of the world. In regions like India and Subsaharan Africa, it merged with existing practices of smoking (mostly of cannabis). In Europe, it introduced a new type of social activity and a form of drug intake which previously had been unknown.

Perception surrounding smoking has varied over time and from one place to another; holy and sinful, sophisticated and vulgar, a panacea and deadly health hazard. Only relatively recently, and primarily in industrialized Western countries, has smoking come to be viewed in a decidedly negative light.

Today medical studies have proven that smoking tobacco is among the leading causes of many diseases such as lung cancer, heart attacks, erectile dysfunction and can also lead to birth defects. The inherent health hazards of smoking have caused many countries to institute high taxes on tobacco products and anti-smoking campaigns are launched every year in an attempt to curb tobacco smoking.

Due to the smoking ban in pubs and other public places, many businesses are suffering. Only last week a news item suggested "Expectant mothers to be given smoking breath tests: Health watchdog tells midwives to challenge all pregnant women" in the UK Daily Mail which stated:

"Last night midwives reacted with fury to the guidance - saying the tests could undermine trust by forcing them virtually to accuse new mothers of lying.

And critics rounded on NICE, which was set up by Labour to assess which drugs and treatments should be available on the NHS, accusing it straying beyond its remit by seeking to influence yet more aspects of people's lives.

Strange that the Daily Mail still managed to blame Labour for the advice although we have now had a collonic Government of Tories and Libdems for the last two months around here. Still if encouraging mothers to give up for the sake of the health of their offspring, can that be so bad. Nothing says they cannot spark up again if really desperate after giving birth, does it?
