The early October sun was warm, the sky was blue, and the waters were nearly perfect on the backwaters of the Mississippi River, downriver from Andalusia,IL.

The dust from the Civil War had barely settled when this span of bridge was constructed in Burlington,IA in 1868.

But this is not in Burlington anymore, since the CB&Q Railroad built the existing bridge there in 1892. This 202 foot span of that original bridge was floated upriver and settled between Moline,IL and Sylvan Island to provide rail service to the now defunct Republic Steel Mill.

This bridge, of Whipple design, was constructed by the Detroit Iron and Bridge Works.

No, not a big league pitch, but my location for taking this shot of a double headed Iowa Interstate freight train making its way from the Rock Island yards across the Sylvan Slough, Arsenal Island, and the mighty Mississippi River.

This undated photo shows the backside of the John Deere factories located along Sylvan Slough in Moline,IL. Also visible is the Moline Wagon Company, the United Light and Power plant, and the Velie automobile factory.

This IC&E freight train makes its way from the former Rock Island Lines yard to the Sylvan Slough bridge and then onto the Government Bridge across the Mississippi River.

It is at this very location that the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River was constructed.

These railroad tracks cross the Sylvan Slough and the Mississippi River at the Rock Island Arsenal. Looks like quite a ride from this vantage point.

Sylvan Island wagon bridge

Built in 1872 by the Baltimore Bridge Co, this bridge once provided access to Sylvan Island on which was a large steel mill once operated. The Sylvan slough is actually a former tailrace for a power plant on the Mississippi River at Moline, IL.
