This is the way it seems some mornings on my way to work. Everyday...across this bridge...but there is usually lots of traffic.

This is the 1896 version of the Government bridge, with previous ones built in 1856,1866, and 1872, that spans the Mississippi River between Davenport, Iowa and the Rock Island Arsenal.

Businesses along 2nd Street in Davenport,Iowa have been busy this week pumping water out of their basements as the Mississippi River has risen dramatically with all the heavy rains.

Dam 15 on the Mississippi River between Rock Island,Illinois and Davenport,Iowa. Built in 1931 and completed in 1934, it is the largest roller dam in the world and is the only one on the river that is not perpendicular with the flow of the river.

Another shot of what has quickly become one of my favorite abandoned farmsteads. It is a very complete abandonment, with the farmhouse, outhouse, two large sheds, and two barns across the road. It sits on a nice sandy ridge, left over from when this was the Mississippi River bottom after the Ice Age receded.

A view of Dam 15 on the Mississippi River between Davenport,Iowa and Rock Island,Illinois.

Construction began in 1931, and was completed in 1934. It is the largest roller dam in the world at 1,203 feet long and consists of 11 roller gates.

It was the first of its kind built on the Mississippi, and is not used for flood control, but to maintain river levels for navigation. It virtually eliminated the infamous 'Rock Island Rapids,' a treacherous stretch of low water and high rocks that would turn steamboats into kindling.

It is the only dam on the river that is not perpendicular with the river.

First known as the Iowa-Illinos Memorial Bridge, the first span (left) was built in 1935 and the second one in 1959. They are now known as the I-74 bridge or Twin Bridges and are slated for replacement in the future. They span the Mississippi River between Bettendorf,Iowa and Moline,Illinois.

A couple of American bald eagles play tag above the waters of the Mississippi River. I have the fortunate pleasure of being able to view and photograph raptors of various types throughout the year....the eagles in the winter and my peregrine falcons in the spring and summer.

A pair of American Bald Eagles do a fly by below Dam 15 on the Mississippi River between Rock Island,IL and Davenport,IA.

There had to be at least 3 dozen eagles flying and fishing below the dam this afternoon. What a sight!

The American Bald Eagle is certainly one of the most majestic birds and this one sits high on a tree, surveying the Mississippi River valley in Davenport,Iowa.
