The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat, well suited to the conditions of the Venetian lagoon. For centuries gondolas were the chief means of transportation and most common watercraft within Venice. In modern times the iconic boats still have a role in public transport in the city, serving as traghetti (ferries) over the Grand Canal. They are also used in special regattas (rowing races) held amongst gondoliers. The gondola is propelled like punting, except an oar is used instead of a pole.Their primary role today, however, is to carry tourists on rides at fixed rates.

Le nom de gondole est mentionné pour la première fois dans un décret du doge Vital Faliero de Doni en 1094. Mais son aspect actuel remonte en partie au XVIe siècle. Un décret dogal de 1562, imposa la couleur noire afin de mettre un terme à la compétition ruineuse qui opposait les riches vénitiens, ambitieux de posséder l’embarcation la plus richement décorée. La légende attribuant le choix de cette couleur à la commémoration des pestes est donc sans fondement. Avant cette réglementation, la gondole était menée par deux rameurs et ne se distinguait pas des autres embarcations vénitiennes hormis le fait qu’elle était utilisée comme moyen de transport privé de personnes. Ainsi, jusqu’au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les patriciens et les riches commerçants de la ville, engageaient des gondoliers pour leur service personnel.

The Orange Oakleaf or Dead Leaf (Kallima inachus) is a nymphalid butterfly found in tropical Asia from India to Japan. With wings closed, it closely resembles a dry leaf with dark veins and is a spectacular example of camouflage.

Lorsqu'il est posé sur une feuille, les ailes fermées, Ce papillon, le Kallima inachus a l'apparence d'une feuille morte.
Kallima inachus est un insecte lépidoptère de la famille des Nymphalidae
