Beautiful jewel chrysalis of the monarch butterfly among the flowers.
Coming back from the Thanksgiving holiday dozens of Monarchs had gone into chrysalis or were about to transform into one. The picture below shows a cat readying for the transformation.

I didn't know much about these trees other than they were good for butterflies and humming birds. I had no idea it would be in full bloom in mid January.

We released 14 Monarchs today. All had been taken as caterpillars from the school garden before a hard freeze. It was a beautiful day in the low 70's. It was fun to hear the oooh's and ahhh's from the kids.

Deliriously happy to have some rain. With only 2 days of rain in October and almost 20 inches behind for the year, I was joyous when the rain started yesterday and continued at a slow pace for most of the day today.

For me this is the most beautiful butterfly. When the light hits its white spots they glitter and shine. I love that orange & white striped body, and the combination of colors on the wings. I had to lay on my back to get this view.

Giant Swallowtail hung around for about 20 minutes. This one shows a pretty good view of both sides of the wings.
