The Bangladesh ready-made-garments industry had placed the country as the second largest apparel exporter to the West (superseded only by China) , the world's number 1 shirt manufacturer and amongst the top 5 jeans manufacturers (alongside Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico and Vietnam). Against all odds - over-population, abject poverty, lack of skills and technical know-how, illiteracy, inept and corrupt governance - it is amazing the country had achieved a standard of global excellence in the RMG sector. Needless to add, it iremains the largest employer of poor women (close to 2 million) and it is on its back that other businesses are also enjoying a boom (to name a few, the telecom industry, the real estate and housing industry, cosmetics industry, many service industries providing child care, health care, banking, transport including the sea port). However thanks to a series of incidents leading to fatalities and injuries in 2012, with the latest and most horrific one being a building collapse in April 2013, the MADE IN BANGLADESH label has incurred a bad name for itself, While lessons are learned, safety measures tightened in compliance with the rights of workers recognized globally, and despite the support and understanding Western wholesale buyers have shown, today the Bangladesh RMG industry stands on the brink of collapse and it feels like instead of advancing a few steps, we will spiral into a hole too deep to be able to crawl out of anytime soon.

Cassia fistula is recognized by its pretty yellow hanging clusters of blooms that have plant-lovers hooked summer after summer with no signs of diminishing appreciation over the years. And, looking closely one can see they literally have hook-shaped stamens with pollen pads jutting out of the petals at the base.
A.K.A., SHONALU in Bengali, and HONALU in the more localized Chittagonian dialect.

On my flight back to Bangladesh from the UK last year I was mostly asleep - at one point I awoke to see if anything interesting was going on outside the window - and saw more of the angular shapes in the lower part of the image and decided they were weird-looking clouds. A few seconds later this boy in the seat in front started exclaiming, "oh wow oh wow, what is this place?", till his parents asked the flight attendant and who replied, "Somewhere over Afghanistan". At which point I woke up and just managed this shot before the landscape below vanished from my horizon.

Mosaic pattern on the two front steps an old house soon to be torn down and replaced with a modern apartment building. A couple of generations back, patterned and often colorful mosaic floors, and walls in bathrooms, kitchens and sometimes stairwells, were commonplace in Dhaka homes - but I haven't seen anyone replicating them in modern buildings. In another generation or so no there will be no mason left with a living memory of the craft and we will have lost yet another skill demanding attention to detail.
