ana2.0 B contorted white flowering quince 6-17-13

fredtruck posted a photo:

I have been giving mid-summer shape to my contorted white flowering quince. Usually with quince, I use the clip and grow method of pruning. In the clip and grow, you shorten a branch to 1, 2 or 3 nodes, depending on the stage of your design, and how many nodes a given branch has. Using clip and grow for a few years produces angular, gnarled branches much prized by those who enjoy flowering quince bonsai.

With this tree, new growth is automatically gnarled due to its contorted habit. Therefore, I wired some branches, and clipped others, leaving a few entirely alone. My goal is to produce branches that intensely writhe around a basic flame-shape style that eventually will bear heavy loads of flowers.

People are often surprised to learn that my Ondae (pinus thunbergii corticosa ‘Ondae’) is eleven years old. They tell me it looks like it’s a hundred. The heavy plates of cork bark create this effect. Some cultivars of cork bark Japanese black pines cork up slowly, taking 20 or 25 years to be mature, while others, like Ondae, cork up rapidly.

The Ondae is 25” tall. Just above the rootspread, the trunk is 2.75” in diameter. The pot for this bonsai is from the Yixing area of China.

fredtruck posted a photo:

According to the standing conventions of bonsai each tree has a front. Many bonsai have more than one front—a view of the tree that shows the aspects of the artists’ design most effectively.

The tree I am photographing here is a chojubai white flowering quince, a dwarf form. There are a number of anomalies about this tree. First, the flowers aren’t white, at least at first, but a greenish yellow. Exposure to the sun turns them white eventually. Second, though this tree has two fronts, in the state the chojubai has achieved, there is really only one front. That is determined by the flowers, and is shown in the picture on the left. The third anomaly concerns the angle of the planting. Is this tree an extreme slant, or is it a semi-cascade? I put the tree in the uncomfortable space between the two standard forms.

The chojubai is a shohin; that is, the tree is less than 8” tall from the apex to the rim of the pot. Shohin are the next to the smallest size of bonsai, and are currently becoming more popular due to the ease of handling and storing them.

The pot is 5.25” wide. I bought the pot from Master Jung in Tainan, Taiwan. He bought it in China. The pot is porcelain. It is hand-painted. All the black outlining is raised. The design is unusual, because rather than the usual traditional design of classic, rustic Asian life, this design is derived from America’s Western floral designs—blossoms and butterflies.

ana2.0 ponderosa 6-6-13

fredtruck posted a photo:

I bought this ponderosa from Andy Smith in April, 2009 at a workshop hosted by the Iowa Bonsai Association. I knew instantly what I wanted to accomplish with this tree, but it was Andy’s technical skill and advice that allowed me to do it. Originally, the part of the trunk that bends sharply was straight, extending more or less vertically. I wanted this brought down so part of it was parallel to the soil. Andy made a small pie cut on the trunk. We wired and bound with raffia, and then bent it as you see.

After 2 years, the wire and raffia were removed. The tree has stayed exactly as we put it.

I had to repot the tree in 2010 as the soil was turning to mud. Two years later, I repotted again, using the shallow oval you see here. During this repotting, the roots and nebari were exposed. This ponderosa has always been hard to pot up. The roots, despite a lot of growing, remain trough-like, shaped like a “V” if you look at them from the end. There is no flat bottom for stability. I’ve used a guy wire to position the tree correctly.

After the repotting, the candles didn’t open last year. This year, they opened, and as they extended, I cut away the old dead needles. I’m hoping to keep the needles relatively short. I know they’ll grow out some, but the tree looks better with shorter needles.

ana2.0 ponderosa 6-6-13

To see the 3-D, use red/cyan glasses.

Now, for something a little different:

"For a species that can grow up to 380′, Coast redwoods can make surprisingly compelling bonsai. They typically feature massive trunks with lots of deadwood. I’ve always thought of this as a result more of a general bonsai aesthetic than a representation of how the trees typically grow – tall and thin in this case. But like other species that make good collected bonsai, redwood can show a lot of character in the trunk."—Jonas Dupuich, 2010

This is my coastal redwood bonsai. I’ve been working with it as a bonsai for almost exactly one year. In that time, I’ve carved the deadwood in the trunk using carving tools, rotary tools and a torch, for removing fibers that stick up, as well as to singe the wood.

I more or less allowed the crown to grow as it wanted, shaping and wiring it periodically to the rounded form you see here.

There is no tree like this in nature. It is a constructed tree, based on a bonsai aesthetic of extremely thick trunks, carved deadwood, and the appearance of age using carved deadwood, falling branches and layers in the foliage.

Currently the Museum, of Modern Art in New York City is showing early work of one of my favorite pop artists, Claes Oldenburg. The focal point on his early work is the Mouse Museum, which derives from Geometric Mouse, a 2-dimensional, multi-plane sculpture and graphic, itself derived from Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse. Geometric Mouse is a multiple in different sizes. MoMA has had this X-size for quite a few years. It used to be painted black, which I preferred over the white here or the blue and yellow at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. The black seemed to bring out the sinister side of Geometric Mouse more fully.

I snapped this shot as a number of energetic schoolgirls sat down to try to draw Geometric Mouse, an apparently simple task that is more complicated than it might seem.
ana2.0 pollock after struth after gursky

fredtruck posted a photo:

In 1994, Thomas Struth photographed One: Number 31 (1950) by Jackson Pollock. He called it Museum of Modern Art I, New York.

In 1997, Andreas Gursky photographed the same Pollock. He called it Untitled VI, 1997.

I photographed a different Pollock, Autumn Rhythm, a few weeks ago at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Many viewers of Pollock’s drip paintings feel they have visual depth, even though there is no central focal point. There is no perspective. Perspective is important in 3-D imagery because it is a supporting cue, no matter how the image is made. On Flickr, and elsewhere, I’ve seen 3-D reconstructions of paintings by Vermeer and other old masters.

When I took this picture, I wondered if I could give Autumn Rhythm 3-D.

Picasso painted Les Demoiselles d’Avignon in 1907, 106 years ago. For a long time, it remained in his studio, seen only by other artists and friends. Now it is commonly regarded as a precursor to Cubism and one of his greatest paintings.

I was the beneficiary of very fortunate circumstances. When I did this panorama, I knew that the woman nearest the painting moved and would most likely produce a fractured image typical of movement in sweep motion panoramas, and would be a good signifier of an emotional reaction to the painting.

When I made the 3-D image from this panorama, the young woman in the center’s face doubled, due to the curvature in the sweep motion. Picasso painted many double-faced women.

Neither of these occurrences was planned for, but my picture benefits from them. It’s just one of those things.

I took this shot because I was intrigued by the co-existence of New York’s Port Authority with Google. I wondered if Google was now keeping track of everyone that entered and left NYC. All the traffic was stopped. As I began my sweep motion, a cab suddenly appeared from nowhere. I began tracking the cab.
I like panoramas. The sweep panorama technology suggests the possibility of introducing time through motion into your image. To continue doing this, without making a lot of boring pictures, will require imagination and being able to seize the moment.

Reading is one of the common activities on the beach. This is particularly so at the Mayan Palace, where the main bulk of guests is middle-aged or older.
Meanwhile, back at Chichen Itza…we were near the Tzompantli, when we saw a small group of people looking at something in the trees. It took a minute, but there, in the brush, we saw two iguanas. One had captured the other by the tail, and judging by the occasional large drops of blood, intended to eat it. The intended victim struggled, but in an unusual way: slowly and periodically.

Iguanas are everywhere in the Yucatan, and often figure in the art of the Mayas. This was, perhaps, as close as I would ever get to seeing a 2-lizard Ouroboros, the mythical snake that devours itself, tail in mouth.
ana2.0 pink lady 4-6-13

fredtruck posted a photo:

Here’s the Pink Lady, again, to illustrate a technique for getting varying color in the flowers. In the winter, this tree is in low light. Low light produces different colors in quince flowers. At the end of winter or beginning of spring, the Lady makes almost white flowers with pink tinges. Very pale. Now that the Lady is outside in full sun, the flowers are going to be incredibly coral. I’ll post a picture when that happens.

I took this picture right after repotting my Coastal Redwood. The new pot is about 3 times deeper than the tree’s previous container, and should do a better job retaining moisture.. I have since tightened up the foliage just a bit, to ensure growing room. The design has remained the same. I also did a lot of carving on the tree. Coastal redwoods, to my mind, are prime carving material.
