Dixieland wordt gespeeld in vierkwartsmaat. Hierbij spelen banjo, piano en slagwerk meestal alle 4 tellen van de maat, terwijl de basinstrumenten, dus contrabas of tuba al dan niet samen met de linkerhand van de piano, afwisselend twee of vier tellen in de maat spelen. Kenmerkend voor het genre is verder dat de koperblazers met klarinet gelijktijdig improviseren, in tegenstelling tot de veel striktere scheiding tussen samenspel en solo's die in latere jazz gebruikelijk werd. De traditionele rolverdeling bij de melodie-instrumenten is dat de trompet de melodie min of meer vrij omspeelt, de trombone met karakteristieke glissandi de overgang van het ene akkoord naar het volgende aangeeft, en de klarinet, binnen de gegeven harmonieën, aanvullende stemmen improviseert.

De traditionele instrumenten die in een dixielandband voorkomen zijn trompet of cornet, trombone, klarinet, soms saxofoon, heel soms kazoo, piano (optioneel), en een ritmesectie bestaande uit contrabas (of tuba of sousafoon), banjo of gitaar, en drums.

Koninginnedag (About this sound pronunciation (help·info)) or Queen's Day is a national holiday in the Netherlands and the kingdom's other constituent countries, Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten, on the 30th April (or on the 29th if the 30th is a Sunday). Queen's Day celebrates the birthday of the Queen of the Netherlands and is supposed to be a day of national unity and "togetherness" (Dutch: saamhorigheid). The tradition started on 31 August 1885, on the birthday of Princess Wilhelmina, later Queen Wilhelmina. Since 1949, after the accession of Queen Juliana, Queen's Day is Queen Juliana's birthday on 30 April. Although Queen Beatrix's birthday is on 31 January, she officially celebrates her birthday on 30 April.

April 30th is a national holiday in Holland to celebrate the queen's birthday. The present Queen Beatrix - www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatrix_of_the_Netherlands - has her birthday in January and upholds the tradition of celebrating on her mother's birthday, the late Juliana's - www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juliana_of_the_Netherlands
