Description: The first St John's Church of England located in Abbott Street was destroyed by a cyclone in 1920. The foundation stone of the new church was set on the 27 June 1926 and the building was formally dedicated on the 23 January 1927.

Description: The first Anglican service in Warwick was held in about 1848. Services were held in the old Court House in Alice Street until 1858 when a timber church was constructed on the site of the present stone building in Grafton Street. The Reverend Benjamin Glennie held Anglican services in Warwick as the Incumbent of Moreton Bay and the Darling Downs from 1860 until 1872.

The foundation stone of the present sandstone church was laid by Bishop Tuffnell on 19 March 1868. This stone building, which was erected between 1868 and 1872, consisted of a short nave, transepts, chancel and a small octagonal vestry in the corner of the chancel and southern transept. A broach spire surmounted the intersection of the nave of the church and the transepts and the roof was of timber shingles.

In 1938-9 substantial alterations were undertaken. These alterations, which were carried out in similar sandstone to that of the earlier building, included the flanking of the chancel with similar sized gabled structures, in the corners between the chancel and the transepts - one to serve as a vestry and the other as a chapel extension. The nave was extended at this time and the base of a tower was built at the western end of the building.

St Thomas' Anglican Church at Toowong, Brisbane

Description: St Thomas' Church of England was constructed in 1877 replacing a 1865 timber building on another site. The church was designed by parishioner and prominent Brisbane architect, F.D.G. Stanley, and has had two major additions. The first addition was in 1886 when the nave was extended, and the second addition was in 1947 when transepts and a chancel were added. The foundation stone was laid by Bishop Hale on 17 February 1877. The contractor was Henry Pears and the building cost 850 pounds. An official opening ceremony in the form of a service was held on 13 October 1877.

The church is situated on a prominent triangular site at the corner of High and Jephson Streets and is a fine example of nineteenth century church architecture with an early English Gothic style. Features of the building include the dominant steeply pitched gabled roof, gabled porches, bi-chrome brickwork and lancet window openings, many of which were filled with stained and coloured glass in the twentieth century.

Description: An allotment in Margaret Street was earmarked as the proposed site of the Brisbane Synagogue in 1885, with the foundation stone laid by Rev. A. P. Phillips on July 7th of that year. One year later, on the 18th of July 1886, the Brisbane Synagogue building was completed and consecrated with great ceremonies and celebrations. The building was designed by Arthur Morry, built by A. Midson, costing 5500 pounds.

Description: St John’s Cathedral is believed to be the last Gothic Cathedral in the world to be completed. It was designed by architect John Pearson and has taken over 100 years to complete. The 13 metre tall final tower, weighing 22 tonnes, was lifted into place on the 11th of November 2008. The cathedral is believed to be the last Gothic Cathedral in the world to be completed. The Archbishop of Brisbane, Dr Phillip Aspinall, officially consecrated the completed Cathedral on Thursday 29th October 2009, 108 years after the laying of the foundation stone.

The Cathedral dominates the smaller buildings in the foreground of the image. Pyrmont Private Hospital is in the foreground.
