Castlemaine Brewery at Milton, Brisbane, 1879

Description: The Castlemaine or Milton Brewery was established at Milton, Brisbane, in 1878 by Fitzgerald Quinlan & Co. The brothers Nicholas and Edward Fitzgerald had established brewing interests at Castlemaine in Victoria, and then in Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Newcastle. In Brisbane, Quinlan Gray & Co. had taken over the interests of the Milton Distillery that was established on the site at Milton in 1870. The first brew by the new Milton Brewery was called Castlemaine XXX Sparkling Ale and was made to the same formula as the beer brewed by Castlemaine Brewery in Victoria. City Brewery, owned by Perkins & Co., Brisbane, 1872-1882

Description: Patrick Perkins and his brother Thomas moved to Queensland from Victoria in 1868. In Victoria, Patrick had had some brewing interests with Castlemaine Brewery and had owned the Alpine Brewery. They built the Downs Brewery at Toowoomba in 1868. In 1872., they took over the Stanbridge and Harrison Brewery that had been established in Mary Street, Brisbane, in 1864. They produced the Perkins XXX Bitter Ale, and later even produced a XXXXX beer (the number of X's referred to the alcoholic strength of the beer). Their company was taken over by Castlemaine Brewery & Quinlan, Gray & Co in 1928 (Information taken from: K. Deutsher, The breweries of Australia : a history, 1999).
In this image, some workers and horses can be seen in the street in front of the two-storey, wooden building of the brewery. The chimney stack can be seen at one end of the building and the the signage at the front reads: City Brewery.
