Halloween Party, 1920s

This invitation to a Halloween party at the University Club in Fort Worth was found in the papers of Henry Zweifel (1883-1970). The party was slated for October 30th; formal attire was requested. Although the year was not provided, the invitation is thought to date to the 1920s, a time period when Zweifel was U.S. District Attorney for the Northern District of Texas in Fort Worth (1921-1927). The University Club was a private club located in the Metropolitan Hotel at 111 East Ninth Street in 1925. It moved in April 1927 to the new Medical Arts Building at Tenth and Burnet Streets. The new club quarters featured recreational equipment, a lounge, card room, billiard room, handball courts, a full kitchen and 8 bedrooms - six for permanent guests, two for visitors. Ladies enjoyed a separate lounge and reception room. The most ornate architectural feature of the new University Club was the ballroom decorated with walnut wainscoting and wood-beamed ceilings painted with the emblems of 29 colleges and universities. It was the only ballroom in Fort Worth with a light dimming system. Zweifel resigned the district attorney’s position in 1927 to enter private legal practice. He also farmed in Hood County and was active in oil exploration and production in West Texas and New Mexico. Zweifel was a political leader in local, state and national levels of the Republican Party from 1916 to 1952, an era when Democratic politics prevailed in Texas.
