Sunrise from Peak 5700

Christopher J. Morley posted a photo:

I needed to look at a soothing scene. Yesterday I bought a Lee Big Stopper. Tested it out
at Barnet Marine Park and became certain my camera has a defect. Almost all of the shots had a horizontal bar/band of light across the entire image about 1/4 of the way up from the bottom. Most alarming! It was always in the exact same place. I had only taken the one lens so I haven't determined if it is the camera or lens. This morning I've decided to hope it was because I didn't cover the eyepiece. Crossings fingers.
Also, the blue cast was stronger than I expected. But I think with some WB mucking around that can be solved. I will try later again later today.
I must figure it out soon as I'm planning to visit the Columbia River Gorge this weekend. Never been before. I understand they have a couple of waterfalls! :)
This shot was taken just before dawn from Peak 5700, in the Pinecone Lake area.

No McDonald's food - for 500 days!
This was all his own initiative. After camping in the mountains for the 2012 New Year I offered to take him to McDonald's for breakfast on the way home. He said, "Dad, how about we don't go there for a month". Not that either of us went there a lot but this was a great goal in my opinion. After one month, he chose to keep going and see if he could do a year. He did. And now today is his 500th consecutive day without eating anything from McDonald's.
Well done Sam, dad is very proud of you.

All of us were impressed by the overhanging cornice on Peak 5700. It is wise to them a wide berth as you can't be sure where the rock ends and when the snow will collapse.
I'm not sure about the names of the mountains behind. This shot is looking South-East. Sky Pilot is just out of the shot to the right. Any help with ID?

Gary and Tu Loan stood there and soaked it in. There was no wind. No other people. Very little talking. And warm.. It was awesome to see them just relax and treasure the moment - looking over from one mountain to another. The colours became bolder after sunset and seemed to last forever. These lovely clouds are lingering above Garibaldi Mountain.

Spent a wonderful night out on a ridge in the Pinecone Lake area. There was more snow on the logging road than I had anticipated, which added an extra hour of hiking each way. We didn't make the intended destination but none of us were disappointed with where we ended up.
This is Tu Loan's tent and she's working the headlamp illumination from the inside. The glow behind Meslilloet is the night lights of Greater Vancouver.
I didn't bring a tent or a bivi sack. Just a sleeping pad and bag. It was sufficient. And the stars danced on my ceiling.
This shot is taken from my campspot. Gorgeous weather and beautiful location!

Vancouver has so many local peaks. We left the city after noon. Drove an hour. Hiked 3 more. And had this view before dinner. This is Sky Pilot, looking south from Mount Mulligan.
A bit surprising that there were only 4 people here on Sunday. Though I guess most people don't get beyond the 3 North Shore ski hills.

Washington State justice for $4.15?

A tale of minor injustice from below the border.
My GF was recently pulled over for speeding in Point Roberts. After a few minutes the officer informed her that she was driving with a suspended license. She was shocked and scared, especially when he planned to impound her car. She told him she had already paid the only previous ticket she had received. Further she had not received any notice of suspension. He and his computer said otherwise. Tears of frustration came and eventually he let her call a family member and have them come to pick up the car, as she was only 5 minutes across the border. In Washington State this is a serious 'crime' and a court date was set.
On Friday her mom drove them across the border and down to court. She waited with the other 'criminals' until it was her turn. The judge read the charges, asked her how she would plead and gave her a minute to speak. I was not there but it went like this;
L - I paid my previous ticket fine.
J - I cannot advise you what to plead but if you wish to fight this charge then plead not guilty. A further court date will be set. You don't have to have a lawyer but you must be proficient in procedure.
Having seen some cases in front of her, my GF knew that the next court date wouldn't be until July. She often drives her daughter to softball tournaments in Washington State and couldn't be without a license that long. However, she knew that she had indeed sent them a cheque for the fine.
There existed a 3rd option (I don't know the name of it) that would allow her to pay a further fine/fee, get her license back and the process would be somewhat over. Her needs outweighed her desire to fight and she took this option. With all the extra fees and charges the total was just over $500.
She went to pay. This is how the conversation went with the clerk;
L - This is not right, I paid my ticket.
C - Yes, I know.
L - Pardon me?
C - Yes, our computer shows you paid for the ticket. But it wasn't paid on time.
L - I sent it in the week after I got the ticket.
C - Well our records show it wasn't cashed until 5 months afterwards.
L - Ok. So how come my license was suspended if I paid it??
C - You didn't pay the late fee.
L - What?! How much is that?
C - Four dollars and fifteen cents

Yes, you read that right. Her license was suspended for a $4.15 late fee (especially when she sent it in on time). Simply outrageous! Imagine how frustrating that moment must of been for her. I get angry just typing it out.

This past weekend was gorgeous around here. I didn't make it up any mountain for views like this. I'll pretend I did with an archive dive from late last year!
The peak on the right is called Unnecessary Mountain, the left peak is the West Lion.

There exists in my head an image of a local mountain I haven't been to yet. Not being a good painter I'm forced to go there and make a photo. Of course, that's not really a punishment. I look forward to the experience.
Since the image also includes swirls I need to learn how to make star trails. The idea of a single shot interests me but very long exposures on digital cameras have technical problems - hotspots and battery drain are common issues. I still had to try, however I did compromise. This photo is four exposures of 22 minutes each, stacked using StarstaX.
Laying down on a picnic table, in a sleeping bag and reading a book. Getting up now and then to press a camera button. The result isn't perfect but I had fun! I'll keep trying out different settings and hopefully by the summer I'll be ready and able to create that image.

Wandering on mountains alone and in the dark is an interesting experience. Adding spice to the mix - there were no trail markers or tracks. Having been there before certainly helps with navigation.
After I took this shot my camera battery died. In my camera bag was a fully-charged spare but I was exhausted after hauling my winter overnight gear up the mountain. Taking more photos ceased to be a priority.
I did have a great sleep that night.

3 times I've gone out here for a walk this month. It used to feel like an escape from the city. Almost therapeutic. All I've felt recently is the sense of being rushed to get out there, disappointment and cold wet feet. The best part of each has been the quiet walk back in the dark.
I'm not giving up on Iona Beach, it's not her fault. I think I just need to correct my reasons for going.
