From below the horizon, the sun simultaneously illuminates the underbelly of a narrow, low-hanging, low-angle bank of clouds and an appreciative audience of adjacent neighborhood trees, creating the illusion that sunset somehow was being funneled through an isolated cone of sky.

The giant yellow spotlight thus created shone across the ecliptic for a considerable distance, leaving all else in gray or pastel blue. And nowhere else across this narrow span of iridescence, observed recently in Phoenix, was the light as intensely yellow and orange as near the bottom, where these oddly angled sheets of cloud took on the appearance of an immense uniform insignia for a non-commissioned officer - sergeant stripes - perhaps even one of an officer's epaulets. But on some viewings this bit of sky has seemed to me also to resemble a giant's gold wristband, standing on edge at the horizon and beginning to sag forward from the weight of all that unsupported gold.

The Perry Park foreground in this shot seems unrealistically bright for this stage of sunrise not because of any PhotoShoppery by me but because an arsenal of incandescent lights to the left of the camera illuminated the small playground as brightly as if it was a Broadway stage.

Looking east from Monroe Street at 4th Avenue northwest of Phoenix Municipal Court.. This photo was enhanced with PhotoShop CS5.

In CS4, correcting geometric lens distortion was almost always a lengthy and painful process of trial and error. With the new lens correction filter in CS5, straightening the picture and removing pin-cushioning took less than a minute.
