Arctic Beach

I just returned home from wonderful week in Norway. This image was taken towards the end of the trip, but one I was eager to see on my calibrated screen. We spotted this beach from the car on the previous day and decided a stop here was a must before we headed home. The thin layer of snow on top of the yellow sand looked incredible and added some foreground interest along with the (very slippery!) ice on the wetter sand. The cyan glow on the horizon sums up arctic light for me. The palette of colour is just sublime in Northern Norway.

This is a shot from this weeks trip to Devon. The weather was quite dreary all day and not be put off I set about exploring some places I had not been to before. It's actually good to be able to have a good look around in dull weather, without rushing like a maniac trying to make to most of good light and shooting good light from a duff spot.

The tide was pretty low and had exposed these wonderful flowing rocks. The gold coloured streaks in the rock looked incredible in the flat light and with the polariser on just popped a treat. The darker lines were where the rocks were wet and not dried out. I don't know if the rocks always look like this, but I will be back to find out thats for sure. There were lots of little composition here that could have swallowed an entire day!

I love Combestone Tor. Probably my favourite, especially for sunrise. The valley below here is stunning. This was yesterday morning. It was very windy and as soon as a comp was framed up the colourful clouds would have gone, so this is one of the few with everything where I wanted it. This is just a 2s exposure and you can see the clouds have quite a bit of softness from the movement!

Joe Rainbow and I still have places on our Dartmoor workshop on the first weekend on November. See my website for details. This is our most likely sunrise spot.

This was taken a few minutes after the sun had set, but was still warming up the edge of the rocks and creating some nee highlights in the wash.

I had to hop up to ISO 400 to get a fast enough shutter speed to retain some detail in the water movement as I was shooting with my polariser on.

I suspect that a lot of people will be visiting this peninsular later in the summer when the Olympics get underway. The Sailing events for the games will be held a couple of miles from here. I know most locals will be avoiding the inevitable gridlock, which is one of the reasons I went tonight. I will be headed in the opposite direction when the games are on!

Mid-day light in The Arctic Circle in January is still very soft. The tones in the sky and mountains in the distance are very subtle, but represent very well how I remember it on the day. A surprising lack of snow, for the time of year and location, but the icy patches add nice relief to the gritty rock textures up front.
Somehow completely inadvertently I managed to photograph an A and a B formed by rocks while I was out today. It's also the initials for me and my wife! Andy & Beth!
Perhaps it would make an interesting set if I can be bothered some time - only 24 to go!!!

There's nothing quite like a hike to Mupe to start off a Sunday! Especially to see some nice streaky clouds and some great colour!

It was like a flickr convention day - great to put faces to names.

This is a 2minute exposure using a 4stop ND and a 0.6 hard grad.

This is an image that's been sat on my hard disk since October. I keep going back to it wishing I had done a few things differently.

I wish I had had my wellies to get in the water and compose this without the rock to the left.

Should have removed the polariser, as the rocks underwater are too fussy for me

Nevertheless, I finally decided to process this and see what I got. The light on the ridge was stunning, so bright and colourful. It was really amazing to see.
