A shot of ice on the Rapid River.

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF-S 18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 *Shutter Speed: 3.2 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/25 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 43mm (68.8mm Equivalent on 35mm Film)

A thank you to Tom for driving me out to these places I have been wanting to get to! I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a remote switch. I also used a polarizing filter and a Tiffen 0.6 soft edge graduated neutral density filter. The Rapid River was the highlight of the whole shooting trip that lasted from sunrise to sunset, the ice formations were so beautiful! We got to a lot of spots but the shots from this location are the most impressive.

As usual I edited the image as a 16 bit TIFF. I did selective mid-tone contrast enhancements and I removed some dust spots. I did some slight sharpening and at the end of the editing I saved as an sRGB JPEG for internet display.

Please press "L" on your keyboard to see the image on black!

A shot of Becca posing in a low key setting. Ah, this is my favorite so far from the shoot!

Hi Flickr, this is Becca! Her Model Mayhem number is 788814.

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF 50mm ƒ/1.8 II *Shutter Speed: 1/200 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/5.6 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 50mm (80mm Equivalent on 35mm Film)

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a remote switch. To the left of the camera I had a Canon Speedlite 430EX II at full power and at 24mm being shot into a 60" Westcott reflective umbrella around 6 feet away from the model as the key light. To the right of the model I had a Vivitar flash at full power pointed directly at her around 15 feet away from the model. The Speedlite was triggered by a Canon ST-E2 wireless Speedlite transmitter and the Vivitar was triggered optically.

Like always I edited the image as a 16 bit TIFF. I did a lot of selective mid tone contrast enhancements. I used an image of the fire from my camping trip this past summer to use in her hands. Like always, at the end of the editing I saved as an sRGB JPEG for internet display.
Hi Flickr, this is Becca! Her Model Mayhem number is 788814.

Here is another image from the shoot with Becca, this one took around 5 hours of editing to produce! It really contrasts against the happy glamour shot I posted of her yesterday!

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF 50mm ƒ/1.8 II *Shutter Speed: 1/200 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/5.6 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 50mm (80mm Equivalent on 35mm Film)

As usual I edited the image as a 16 bit TIFF I added a lot of selective mid tone contrast enhancements and changed the shape of some things to aid with the direction of the image. I added bright 105mm prime lens flare to the image in the model's hands and used a mask to remove some light around the fingers to give the impression that she's holding them. I made the eye appear red to add to the image. Of course, at the end of the editing I saved as a sRGB JPEG for internet display.

A shot of Becca with an antique camera and umbrella.

Hi Flickr, this is Becca! Her Model Mayhem number is 788814.

Wow people are probably wondering where I have been the past two months; I have been studying chemistry and doing a lot of work shooting for charity. So since it's the Christmas break I was able to muster the time to do a shoot. As you can see, I have bought a studio background, its too cold outside to shoot models on location! It cost me $50 to book the place that I did the shoot in. The model was great to work with, the only problem was I couldn't get her to stop laughing, haha. There's more to come from the shoot with this model...

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF 50mm ƒ/1.8 II *Shutter Speed: 1/200 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/2.5 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 50mm (80mm Equivalent on 35mm Film)

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a remote switch. To the right of the camera I had a Canon Speedlite 430EX II at full power at 24mm being shot into a 60" Westcott reflective umbrella about 5 feet away from the model a bit higher than the model and at an angle. To the left of the camera I had a Vivitar flash at full power being shot onto the 10x12 foot background, I used an umbrella on the bracket the flash was mounted on as a flag to prevent too much light falling onto the model, you can see just a nice little highlight on her right arm in the shot. The Speedlite was triggered with a Canon ST-E2 wireless transmitter and the Vivitar was triggered optically.

I did the usual selective mid tone contrast enhancements and removing small spots in editing. I changed the shape of some things to make the model appear more flattering. I also removed the chromatic aberrations manually. I also added a bit of space infront of the model to enhance the composition. As normal I edited as a 16 bit TIFF and converted to an sRGB JPEG for internet display.

Please press "L" on your keyboard to see the image on black!

A shot of Ashley flipping her hair infront of the camera on Whitefish Island.

This is Ashley, I met her on Model Mayhem, her Model Mayhem number is 1216213.

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF 50mm ƒ/1.8 II *Shutter Speed: 1/200 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/2.2 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 50mm (80mm Equivalent on 35mm Film)

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a remote switch. To the right of the camera I had a Canon Speedlite 430EX II at 24mm and at full power being shot into a 60" Westcott reflective umbrella about 3 feet away from her, the Speedlite was triggered by a Canon ST-E2 wireless transmitter. To the left of the camera I had a Vivitar flash with a cloth diffusing it at full power being held out over the water by an assistant, it was triggered optically by the light from the Speedlite. To the right of the camera and infront of the model I had another assistant hold a silver reflector to fill in shadows on the right side of her nose.

I did an insane amount of editing on this image, it didn't take me too long, but I did a lot in the few hours that I edited this image. I used atleast 12 different layers and a lot of selective dodging and burning and mid-tone contrast enhancements. I also added the rain by creating noise in the image and adding motion blur to it. I created the water droplets in her hair by also using a noise layer but using motion blur at two different angles to create a sort of diffused white sphere. I added some contrast by blending a black and white layer with the image and using the blend mode soft light. At the end of the editing I saved the 16 bit TIFF I had been using, converted to sRGB colourspace, and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

© Billy Wilson 2010

An old building at the Canadian Sault Lock Canal. I think this is the best looking building in my entire city. I like the texture of the stones on this building, so that was what I wanted to bring out in the editing. I hope I created the effect that you can reach out and interact with the building because of the 3-D feel to it. I am hoping to produce a series of conceptual images, if school doesn't take up too much of my time.

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF-S 18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 IS *Shutter Speed: 1/4 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/11 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 18mm (28.8mm Equivalent on 35mm Film)

I took the images that make up this image after I had finished a shoot to produce an image that I am going to auction later for charity. The stone in the building is side lit by the sunrise.

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a remote switch. I had a polarizing filter and a Tiffen 0.6 soft edge water white graduated neutral density filter on the lens. This image is from 7 different exposures that I combined in Photomatix Pro and tone mapped with settings that gave a low contrast look. I opened the 16 bit TIFF from Photomatix in ACR and added a lot of clarity. I opened the file in CS4 and dodged and burned to bring out mid-tone contrast. I used the sponge tool to remove the chromatic aberrations. I straightened the image, corrected the perspective distortion, and corrected the barrel distortion. At the end of the editing I saved the 16 bit TIFF, converted to sRGB colourspace, and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

© Billy Wilson 2010

I thought this might be appropriate since we are approaching Halloween. I know this is probably really disturbing for some viewers, but I wanted to post it anyway just to see the response. This image took a lot of work and hours to do. Its just me covered in red coloured corn syrup in my basement with dramatic lighting and pose. I hope people can appreciate the work that went into making this image. I started with the concept of expressing how I feel about the amount of school work I currently have but that developed into an Oedipus concept, but I decided against that since it would have looked too creepy.

I am actually scared about uploading this since it is outside of my usual work, but I want to focus on a darker more unconfortable theme this month since Halloween is coming up. So, do people find this image too creepy?

The background is actually wall paper in my basement.

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF 50mm ƒ/1.8 II *Shutter Speed: 1/200 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/5.6 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 50mm (80mm Equivalent on 35mm Film)

So I cross lit this with my Canon Speedlite 430EX II and Vivitar flash. I had the Speedlite to the right of the camera at full power being shot into a 60" Westcott reflective umbrella at 105mm with a 1/2 CTO gel around 2 feet away from me, with the shaft choked right up so the flash hit the center of the umbrella. The Vivitar flash was to the left of the camera and behind me, it was at full power pointed directly at me about 2.5 feet away.

I focused the shot with my laptop using remote live view. I opened the RAW file in CS4 and worked on the image as a 16 bit TIFF. I did a lot of dodging and burning and mid-tone contrast enhancements and some other little things and at the end saved, converted to sRGB colourspace, and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

A shot of Alona Bay Creek above Highway 17. Thanks to Tom for driving me up here today.

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF-S 18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 IS *Shutter Speed: 5.0 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/22 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 18mm (28.8mm Equivalent in 35mm Film)

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a remote switch. I also used a polarizing filter and a Tiffen 4X4" 0.6 soft edge water white graduated neutral density filter. The filter was positioned so that the brighter top of the image wasn't overexposed.

I opened the RAW file in ACR and I changed the hue and saturation of some of the colours. I opened the RAW file in CS4 and saved it as a 16 bit TIFF. I did some dodging and burning as well as some mid-tone contrast enhancements to make the image stand out more. I also selectively brightened and darkened parts of the image to influence the viewer's attention. At the end of the editing I saved the 16 bit TIFF file, converted to sRGB colourspace and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

A night shot of the Ferris Wheel moving. I took this shot and edited it a few months ago.

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF-S 18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 IS *Shutter Speed: 3.2 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/8 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 29mm (46.4mm Equivalent on 35mm Film)

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a 2 Sec. selftimer.

I opened the RAW file in ACR and used my tone mapping preset which recovers highlights and shadows and increases the mid-tone contrast of the image. I also changed the hue of the colours. I opened the RAW file in CS4 and saved as a 16 bit TIFF file and cloned out a few things. I put the edited image ontop of the original and used a mask to remove anything that didn't look good because of the tone mapping. I saved the 16 bit TIFF file, converted to sRGB colourspace, and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a remote switch. I also used a polarizing filter and a Tiffen 0.6 soft edge water white graduated neutral density filter. In this shot I decided to freeze the waves rather than blur them.

I opened the RAW file at my campsite on my laptop in ACR and added a bit of tone mapping to it, with the recovery and fill light sliders. I opened the RAW file in CS4 and saved as a 16 bit TIFF and cropped the image. I then did some dodging and burning to add to some contrast to the image. I also used the brush tool to selectively add particular colours to the image. At the end of the editing I saved the 16 bit TIFF file, converted to sRGB colourspace and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

© Billy Wilson 2010

A shot of Ashley sitting in the water at Hiawatha Highlands Conservation Area.

This is Ashley, I met her on Model Mayhem, her Model Mayhem number is 1216213.

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF-S 18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 IS *Shutter Speed: 1/5 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/4.0 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 27mm (43.2mm Equivalent in 35mm Film)

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup, a polarizing filter, a Tiffen 0.6 soft edge water white graduated neutral density filter, and a remote switch. To the left of the camera for key light there was a Canon Speedlite 430EX II at full power being shot into a 60" Westcott reflective umbrella at 105mm about 4 feet away from the model. To the right of the model I had a Vivitar flash pointed directly at her at full power about 4.5 feet away from her. The Speedlite was triggered by a Canon ST-E2 wireless Speedlite transmitter and the Vivitar was triggered optically.

I opened the RAW file in ACR and added some clarity to the background. Then I opened the RAW file in CS4 and saved it as a 16 bit TIFF file. I used the patch tool to remove blemishes and soften the light. I did some local mid tone contrast enhancements on places all over the image. I used lens blur on the background at different amounts in different areas to better simulate a lens of maybe around ƒ/0.5 for the wide focal length I used. I also used the patch tool to remove specular highlights in the water that were caused by the flashes. I used a high pass filter on a layer set to blend mode soft light to sharpen the image near the end of the editing. I used radial blur on a layer of rended clouds to produce the light rays. At the end of the editing I saved the 16 bit TIFF file, converted to sRGB colourspace and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

Ashley at Whitefish Island

Billy Wilson Photography posted a photo:

© Billy Wilson 2010

A heavily processed image of Ashley, inspired by the images by Jill Greenberg and Dave Hill. This image took two days of processing and experimentation. My goal was to make a contrasty image in the liking of these people without the typical lighting used to achieve these looks, because of the flatter image I started with the overall appearance of the edited image isn't quite as good as if I had used an appropriately lit image, this is especially apparent on her face, it is a bit darker than I would want. There is a before and after comparison in the comments below.

This is Ashley, I met her on Model Mayhem, her Model Mayhem number is 1216213.

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF-S 18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 IS *Shutter Speed: 1/40 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/4.5 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 32mm (51.2mm Equivalent in 35mm Film)

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup, a polarizing filter, and a remote switch. To the right of the camera I had a Canon Speedlite 430EX II at full power being shot into a 60" Westcott reflective umbrella at 105mm, the Speedlite had a 1/2 CTO gel on it and I did a custom white balance of the background so it came out neutral, the ambient light was warm because it was around sunset. I underexposed by around 2 stops below the ambient exposure. The Speedlite was triggered by a Canon ST-E2 wireless Speedlite transmitter mounted on the camera.

I used pretty well every single process I know in editing this image. I feel like I could write a whole book on how I made this one. The main points were controlling which parts of the image are light or dark and adding contrast selectively to areas that I want to stand out more. This was done using dodging and burning, layers brightening and darkening the image and selectively cutting out parts with a layer mask. I also used HDR processing the background to isolate the highlights on top of the trees to bring them out more, to give a better sense of dusk. I also used a lot of layer adding lighting effects and trying to make my one light look like there could have been more around her. I have added some rim light, the light is stronger on her left side and the wood she's holding was had highlights added to it. I have also added sun beams to enhance the feeling that the image was taken near dusk. I also made the background warmer. I processed the file as a TIFF and converted to sRGB colourspace and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

NOTE I have reuploaded twice to make a few revisions.

I added rain and lens flares. This image took around 4 hours of editing. As usual for internet display I saved as an sRGB JPEG.

© Billy Wilson 2010

A shot of Ashley sitting at the waterfall

This is Ashley, I met her on Model Mayhem, her Model Mayhem number is 1216213.

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF-S 18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 IS *Shutter Speed: 0.6 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/5.6 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 18mm (28.8mm Equivalent on 35mm Film)

I shot this a month ago and I'm still working on getting this model's images done, school has been very demanding and it is hard to find the time to process the images that I have.

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a remote switch. I also used a polarizing filter and a Tiffen 0.6 soft edge water white graduated neutral density filter to balance the exposure at the top of the image.

To the right of the camera I had a Canon Speedlite 430EX II being shot into a 60" Westcott reflective umbrella pointed at the model at full power and at 105mm. To the left of the camera I had a Vivitar flash at full power pointed directly at the model being triggered optically. The Speedlite was triggered by a Canon ST-E2 wireless Speedlite transmitter.

I opened the RAW image in CS4 and saved as a TIFF and edited on separate layers. I did a lot of selective dodging and burning and brightening and darkening of certain parts in the image. I used the sponge tool to remove all noticable chromatic aberrations. I used liquify and the turbulence tool to change the shape of the model's face and body features to make them a little more flattering. I used the patch tool to remove posterization and blemishes. I cloned out a little platform for viewing the falls in the background. I also used a high pass filter on a layer set to blend mode soft light to sharpen the image. At the end of the editing, I saved the 16 bit TIFF file, converted to sRGB colourspace, and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

Another I shot yesterday on a shoot with Tom. The shot of the model is from a month and a half ago.

I shot all of the images on Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS and a Canon EF-S 18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 IS lens. The model was cross lit and enhanced using dodging and burning and mid-tone contrast enhancements. The tunnel had a lot of contrast added to it as well. All the editing was done on 16 bit TIFF files and the final image was converted to sRGB colourspace and saved as a JPEG at the end of the editing.

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a remote switch. I also used a polarizing filter and a Tiffen 0.6 soft edge water white graduated neutral density filter to balance the exposure of the sky and the water.

I opened the RAW file in ACR and used my tone mapping preset, which does a lot of recovering of highlight and shadow detail. I added a great amount of clarity with the spot adjustment brush. I opened the RAW file in CS4 and placed it over top an original unedited version of the image and used a mask to selectively remove areas that didn't look right. I saved the RAW file as a 16 bit TIFF file and contiuned to edit it. I did some dodging of the highlights and burning of some shadows in select areas to increase the mid tone contrast. I added some extra colour to the trees in the upper right corner with the sponge tool. I used a 50% grey layer to dodge the trees in the upper right part of the image to make them brighter as well. At the end of the editing I saved the 16 bit TIFF file, converted to sRGB colourspace, and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a remote switch. To the left of the camera I had a Vivitar flash at full power being shot directly at her, about 5 feet away. To the right of the camera I had a Canon Speedlite 430EX II at full power at 105mm being shot into a 60" Westcott reflective umbrella about 6 feet away from her. The Speedlite was triggered by a Canon Speedlite 430EX II mounted on the camera and the Vivitar was triggered optically.

I opened the RAW file in ACR and added a little bit of clarity. I opened the RAW file in CS4 and saved as a 16 bit TIFF file. I used the patch tool to soften the light and remove blemishes. I selected particular areas and did local mid tone contrast enhancements on them. I removed the small specular highlights that had formed from the flashes on the water with the patch tool, I selectively dodged and burned areas in the image to bring out better contrast. I applied a high pass filter on a layer set to blend mode soft light, to sharpen the image. I selectively controlled which areas in the image were light or dark by changing the blend mode on some layers and using a mask. At the end of the editing, I saved the 16 bit TIFF file, converted to sRGB colourspace, and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

© Billy Wilson 2010

A shot of Ashley lying down at Hiawatha Highlands Concervation Area.

This is Ashley, I met her on Model Mayhem, her Model Mayhem number is 1216213.

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF 50mm ƒ/1.8 II *Shutter Speed: 1/200 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/1.8 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 50mm (80mm Equivalent in 35mm Film)

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a remote switch. To the left of the camera I had a Canon Speedlite 430EX II at 1/4 power at 24mm being shot into a 60" Westcott reflective umbrella that was at the same height as the model. The lightstand was in the stream about 3.5 feet away from her. Behind the model I had a Vivitar flash at full power with a cloth over it to provide rim light to separate the model from the background. The Canon Speedlite 430EX II was triggered by a Canon ST-E2 wireless Speedlite transmitter and the Vivitar flash was triggered optically.

I opened the RAW file in ACR and manipulated the tone curve slightly. I opened the RAW file in CS4 and saved it as a 16 bit TIFF. I did some local contrast enhancements to the skin and darkened the background to bring the model out more. I also made her face a little brighter to draw attention to it. I also slightly cropped the image for better composition, since I was unable to compose much since the camera's tripod was ontop of a little rock in the creek. At the end of the editing I saved the TIFF file, converted to sRGB colourspace, and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

Amazing!
