I have to say that Lightroom is fantastic for B&W conversion, all I do is remember what colors were in the photo, then darken those colors with the sliders provided. You can do the same with photoshop, but I am liking the contrasty results I'm getting from Lightroom.

I woke up nice and early yesterday, and took the short walk from my hotel to the Granville Street Bridge. I was absolutely stoked when I saw the morning light shining on the buildings and the Burrard Street Bridge.

New year, new format:

Technique I learned everything I know about photography because of flickr, so unlike the Colonal, I've decided to share my secret recipe with you. =)

-Sony a300 w/ Sony 18-70 kit lens
-Tripod
-28mm
-ISO 100
-F22
-3 exposures @ 8sec, 15sec, and 25sec
-Tonemapped in Photomatix Pro 4
-Adjusted contrast, unsharp mask, and boosted vibrance in CS5
-Noise Reduction in Lightroom 3.0

Using multiple exposures for light trail shots is not only a time saver, but also increases the intensity of the trails. I spent a half hour on the overpass, and of the 18 shots i took. Only two had light trails on both sides of the highway.

By using multiple exposures, I can use one exposure for the red trails, one for the white trails, the third shot I waited for more cars to come from behind me to increase the intensity of the red trails.

Uptown Shopping Centre is Victoria's newest mall, and soon to be the largest mall on Vancouver Island. The buildings in this shot are of the first phase of the mall. Which includes a Wal-mart Supercenter (the largest in Canada), Best Buy, and a Future Shop as the anchor tenants. The next phase will include a "town square," and the majority of the mall's smaller stores and restaurants. Which have yet to be announced.

The mall was a much needed replacement for the old 1960's strip mall that was previously there. All the buildings in this shot were formally a giant surface parking lot. I'm glad to see the space being fully utilized.

This is my first shot of 2011. Still sounds weird to say, doesn't it? I have been waiting for over a year to take this shot. I just had to wait until the buildings were complete. Another hiddden gem I found today in the archives from a trip to Vancouver in January. On this trip along the Stanley Park seawall, I passed The Vancouver Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault. Being a huge Canucks fan I blurted out "Good luck with Chicago tomorrow," and he replied "thanks!" The next night they beat Chigago 5-3. Although Chicago did beat the Canucks in the playoffs, and go on to win the Stanley Cup........ True story! =D

This is the end of the road for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Built from 1881 to 1885, the railway stretches from Montreal to Vancouver, and encompasses nearly 3700 Kilometers (2300 miles).

The Gate of Harmonious Interest, or Tong Ji Men, was erected in 1981. It was built in China and is modeled after typical gates there. Both the Chinese and non-Chinese communities worked together to have this gate installed over Fisgard Street. Two inscriptions allude to this cooperative effort: "To work together with one heart" and "To help each other achieve harmony."
It is a most interesting structure in terms of Chinese cultural symbolism. It's overall theme is Unity in Duality. This theme is seen in the Gate's treatment of the Golden Dragon, a Yang element, and the Red Phoenix, a Yin element. Red symbolizes joy and festivity while gold symbolizes wealth and prosperity. These colours-together with touches of Qing (a blue-green colour), which is symbolic of growth and peace-represents the harmony of the elements. In particular, the red and gold represent the union of heaven and earth.

There are bells hung from the corner of the gate. When these chime in the wind, Buddhists and Taoists believe they ward off evil spirits. On either side of the gate are two lions, who act as guardians protecting Chinatown. The female lion on the right side and the male on the left again signify the balance of Yin and Yang. It is an impressive opening to the oldest and complete Chinatown in Canada, and second oldest in North America, after San Francisco's chinatown.

At the moment I took this shot, I had been walking around Downtown Vancouver for about 10 hours taking photos. I was literally hobbling along the Stanley Park Seawall hoping for something good. This was the scene when I got there. It definitely made the strenuous journey all worth it. =D

Hotel Europe is a six-story heritage building located at 43 Powell Street (at Alexander) in the Gastown area of Vancouver, British Columbia. The building was commissioned by hotelier Angelo Calori and built in 1908 - 1909 by Parr and Fee Architects. Situated on a triangular lot, the building is designed in the flatiron style. It was the first reinforced concrete structure to be built in Canada and the earliest fireproof hotel in Western Canada. Contractors had to be brought in from Cincinnati, Ohio for the necessary expertise; the Ferro-Concrete Construction Company began this project six years after constructing the first tall concrete building in the world.

With funding from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the building was renovated in 1983 as affordable housing with A. Ingre and Associates as the project designers. The residential units are now managed by the Affordable Housing Society. A beer parlour formerly existed below the ground floor, which included areaways extending underneath the above sidewalks. To prevent a cave-in from the weight of pedestrians and above ground traffic, the City of Vancouver filled the areaway in with pea gravel at a cost of $215,000, which presumably can be easily removed in the event of future restoration.

The Hotel Europe was one of the filming location for the suspense movie The Changeling. In it, the building houses the Seattle Historical Society, but the hotel sign can be seen on the right side facade of the building in some takes. Some scenes are set on its spectacular roof terrace.

Canada Line is a rapid transit line in the Metro Vancouver region of British Columbia, Canada. Opened in August 2009, it is the third line in TransLink's SkyTrain metro network, servicing Vancouver, Richmond, and the Vancouver International Airport. It is coloured turquoise on route maps.

The Canada Line comprises 19.2 kilometres (11.8 mi) of track; the main line goes from Vancouver to Richmond, while a 4 km spur line from Bridgeport Station connects to the airport. It opened fifteen weeks ahead of the original schedule, well in advance of the 2010 Winter Olympics in February.

The Canada Line was anticipated to see 100,000 boardings per day in 2013, and 142,000 boardings per day by 2021, but it has exceeded these targets. Ridership has grown steadily since opening day, with average ridership of 83,000/day in September 2009; 93,000/day in December 2009; and 105,000/day in March 2010. During the 2010 Winter Olympics, the line's ridership increased a further 118 per cent to an average of 228,190 per day over the 17-day event.

The Story

Here's an oldie for you. I'm waiting patiently for my wide angle lens. As soon as I get it, I'll be on my way to Vancouver to take some wide angle architecture shots. Took this one about a year ago on my photo shoot with TIA International Photography. Both Tosin and I ended up with this shot from the 18th floor of the Chateau Victoria. Where we were having lunch. I guess that's what happens when you get two great photographers at the same table. ;-)

I'm all healed from my car crash. Thanks so much for all your kind wishes! My car was a write off, so I am now the proud owner of a 1984 Pontiac Fiero.

It is such a fun car!!! It has speakers in the headrests, and you feel like your in an old 80's arcade game when you drive it. The best part, it was designed by John Delorean, the same guy that designed the car from Back to the Future.
