For one euro visitors to Santiago de Compostela can have their picture taken with this "pilgrim" dog on the plaza of the clock tower. Thousands of pilgrims make the long trek to Santiago in Galicia every year, and once there it is time to let their hair down a bit.

Tuna in the Bar, Galicia, Spain

Like the medieval band of troubadors from which it is descended Tuna de Derecho of Santiago de Compostela gathers at a tavern in a little plaza after their nightly performance to continue their singing, now just for fun. The gathering finally broke up at 3:00 AM. Made up of university students, the Tuna, sings for donations to help them pay for their studies. Often racey and very suggestive, the singers are nothing if not charming. Must see in Santiago.

Wild Horse Roundup, Galicia, Spain

Wild horse are gathered from the hills and brought to a coral at the Rapa Das Bestas in Vimianzo, Galicia. On the second day the horses are gathered in the coral where teams of five men wrestle them to the ground so they can have their manes and tails trimmed. This ancient tradition as passed from economic necessity to popular cultural tradition, the asociacion now making the event and increasingly popular attraction. The wild west of the Celtic World.

Approaching through the slot canyons at Petra, Jordan is a breathtaking experience, when suddenly the Treasury building comes into view, like you've always seen it, there carved into the face of the cliff. Really amazing, because it is so hidden and unexpected.
I had rushed down right at opening in the morning so that I could be there before the crowds arrived and had a good half hour before things got busy. Time enough to get off a couple of pans. Yes, I rode the camel. Don't miss it.

Getting the horses in as Sandhills Storm Approaches, Nebraska

Time to get the horses into the barn on a ranch in the Sandhills of Nebraska. The storm was approaching from the north and it meant business. The guys were out putting up hay when they saw it coming and started getting the horses under shelter in a hurry. I'll always remember the afternoon, the great light that gave way to a morbid green as the storm overtook us, the postures of the cowboys, and the smell of the approaching rain. Don't always get these moments in life.

Thunderstorm and Horses, Sandhills, Nebraska

It was a honker thunderstorm that had swept through the Sandhills of Nebraska. On the ridge beneath the towering clouds a herd of horses stopped just long enough for this picture. I'm a sucker for the Great Plains and the storms of summer, always unpredictable and dramatic, always bringing towering drama to the landscape.

Clouds trailing off Boreray, St. Kilda, Scotland

Clouds trailing off Borerary toward Stac Lee, out in the St. Kilda group, beyond the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Stuck out in the Atlantic this remote group of islands is both haunting and naturally wonderful. Because of their remote, open-sea location, the Atlantic winds often create these cloud patterns, though usually going the other direction. Borerary is uninhabited, but home to a rare breed of sheep, as well as hundreds of thousands of nesting birds like Gannets.

Sunset at the Neist Point Lighthouse, Isle of Skye, Scotland

Evening at the Neist Point Lighthouse is almost always a great experience. The lighthouse was one of those built by the famous Stevenson family of lighthouse designers. The same family as Robert Louis Stevenson of Treasure Island fame. The rock is basalt, the same tough stuff you see at the Giants Causeway further south in Northern Ireland and Fingal's Cave. A nice place on a summer evening. Scan from a Velvia slide.
