A menu card for tiffin in the venerable Astor House Hotel in Shanghai for the passengers of the S.S. Resolute of the Hamburg American Line on its round-the-world cruise in 1932.

57 years later, in 1989, I happend to have several breakfasts and dinners in both the large ball room and the smaller dining room of the Pujiang Fandian (the old Astor House), just before the ball room was converted into part of the new Shanghai Stock Exchange. The decor still echoed the grandeur of the 1930s, but the menu was much diminished.

This is the rather spectacular cover of the brochure for the 1936 around-the-world cruise of the Franconia of the Cunard White Star Line.

The 1936 cruise of the Franconia took the passengers to almost two dozen destinations over four months: Trinidad, Brazil, St. Helena, South Africa, Madagascar, Seychelles, India, Ceylon, Malaysia, Siam, Java, Bali, Philippines, China, Japan, Hawaii, Los Angeles, Panama and back to New York.

Like the 1936 cruise of the SS President Monroe ( www.flickr.com/photos/thomassturm/sets/72157629297418992/... ), this was the last grand cruise of the Franconia before the mounting tension in Europe would make leisurely cruises around the world a thing of the past.

I've recently found a vintage View-Master with several reels from the mid-50s in an antique store. The photos are very typical tourist shots of various sights in California and I'll post some of the more interesting ones.

This photo - copyrighted 1955 - shows Union Square as it looked two redesigns ago, surrounded by the familiar buildings that haven't changed in six decades.

It looks like somebody has been over-watering the plants again.
