Title: May-Stringer House at 601 Museum Court: Brooksville, Florida

General note: The May-Stringer House, home today to the Heritage Museum, sits on land once part of a 160-acre parcel deeded to Richard Wiggins in 1843 under the Armed Occupation Act. It was built by John May after he purchased the property from Wiggins in 1855 and it was later sold in 1903 to Dr. Sheldon Stringer. The twelve room, house is a seven gable structure with gingerbread trim. It stands four stories tall, has ceilings 10 feet high and has double sliding pocket doors. The house was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

General note: A nearby historical marker reads, "In 1842, South Carolinian Bird M. Pearson staked a claim on 5,000 acres and called it Tiger Tail Hill, one of the few surviving plantations in Florida and the one of the oldest houses in Hernando County. Pearson built the manor house's east wing in 1847 and later residents expanded it, beginning in 1852. He raised citrus, cattle, and sugarcane. In 1904 Chicago residents Raymond (1873-1954) and Margaret Drier (1868-1945) Robins purchased the property and named it Chinsegut Hill, an Inuit word meaning a place where lost things are found. The estate served as a retreat from the couple's tireless activism on behalf of workers, women, and the poor. Guests entertained here included Thomas Edison, Senator and Mrs. Claude Pepper, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, J.C. Penney and Helen Keller. During the Great Depression, the Robinses suffered severe losses and donated Chinsegut to the federal government, collaborating with the Department of Agriculture on an experimental station to benefit Florida farmers. In return, the couple could live there until their deaths. New Deal workers improved the property and built two cabins in 1933. In 1958, the University of South Florida acquired the property for use as a conference center."

General note: Frank Elmore Saxon was born in 1841 in Alabama, Georgia. His family moved to Florida prior to the Civil War, initially settling in Tallahassee. During the war, Saxon was a member of the Hernando Wild Cats, (part of the Florida Third Regiment), and was wounded near Jacksonville in 1862. After the war, Saxon served as county tax assessor from 1874 through 1876, as Brooksville's postmaster and chief of police from 1880 to 1883, and as clerk of the court from 1887 to 1888 and again from 1893 to 1909. He also served as a State Representative from 1887 to 1889. He donated land for a three-room school house large enough to hold all the students in Hernando County, grades one through 12. Frank E. Saxon died in 1922 and is buried in the Brooksville Cemetery. His Great Floridian plaque is located at the Heritage House Museum, which was originally the May-Stringer House, the Saxon's home, at 601 Museum Court, Brooksville.
