General note: Fort Caroline was built near the mouth of the St. Johns River in 1564 by a French expedition led by René de Laudonnière. Spanish soldiers under the command of Pedro Menéndez de Avilés defeated the French in September 1565 and expelled them from Florida. The Spanish founded St. Augustine, the oldest permanent European settlement in North America, following the defeat of the French. This image was first published by German engraver Theodor de Bry in 1591. It was based on original sketches made by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, a member of Laudonnière's expedition. Today, the National Park Service maintains a replica of the French fort on the site.

General note: Located 70 miles west of Key West, Fort Jefferson was built between 1846 and 1875 to protect the main shipping channel leading into the Gulf of Mexico. During the Civil War, Fort Jefferson held several conspirators involved in the Abraham Lincoln assassination, including Dr. Samuel Mudd. The army discontinued active use of the fort in 1888, at which time it became a quarantine station for the Marine Hospital Service. In 1935, Franklin Roosevelt designated the site as Fort Jefferson National Monument. It was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1970), and is today part of the National Park System.

General note: Construction began on Fort Zachary Taylor in 1845, the year Florida achieved statehood. The fort was built to protect the important port of Key West, one of the largest cities in 19th century Florida. During the Civil War, Fort Taylor remained under federal control. Originally built 1,200 feet offshore, a dredging project in the 1960s land locked Fort Taylor. Today, the National Landmark site is home to the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the United States.

General note: Construction on Fort Clinch began in 1847. The fort was built at the mouth of the St. Mary's River to protect the deep-water port of Fernandina, gateway to Florida's only cross-peninsular railroad. During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) worked to restore the park. Fort Clinch State Park portrays how the fort looked during the American Civil War, circa 1864.

Title: Castillo de San Marcos: St. Augustine, Florida

General note: Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the United States. The Spanish began construction on the fort in 1672, following several attempted sieges of the city by the British. The Castillo replaced various wooden forts built by the Spanish in St. Augustine between 1565 and 1672. The fort remained active throughout the colonial period, the Seminole Wars, and during the American Civil War. From 1821, when the United States took control of Florida, until 1942 the fort was known as Fort Marion, in honor of Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion (also known as the "Swamp Fox"). In 1942, Congress authorized renaming the fort Castillo de San Marcos. Since being transferred to the Park Service in 1933, the Castillo has been a popular tourist attraction in St. Augustine.
