General note: Spanish missionaries established San Luis in 1633 near the site of an existing Apalachee town. The Spanish constructed a stockade at San Luis in the 1670s to protect against raids by Carolinians and Creek Indians. The council house recreates similar structures built by the Apalachee before and after European arrival in the southeast. Mission San Luis was destroyed by British and the Creek in 1704. The Apalachee were dispersed west to Louisiana, north among the Creeks, and east to St. Augustine; some were enslaved by the British and the Creeks. Today, the site is home to a living history museum that portrays the mission in the late 17th century.
