In his book, 'Field Guide to Cocktails,' Rob Chirico claimed that 73 percent of Southerners have not actually tried a mint julep. That sounds like a made-up statistic, but it's probably not far from accurate either. Here's how you can reverse this alarming trend:

Mint Julep recipe: take 4 fresh mint sprigs, 2 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey, 1 tsp powdered sugar, and 2 tsp water. Muddle mint leaves, powdered sugar, and water in a julep cup. Fill the it with shaved or crushed ice and add bourbon. Top with more ice and garnish with a mint sprig. Serve with a straw.

The julep cup was my husband's first great pottery idea. Actually, it was his second. The first was a microwave bacon cooker (which I have and will not make)

No ladybugs were harmed in the production of this line of pottery- but I started making them when we had a ladybug infestation in the house. I thought- if they're on everything already, why not put them on the pottery?

White creamer with Blue Interior

This is part of my "color bowls" series, in which only the interior of the piece is colored. It's a bit of a surprise- oh, a plain white bowl/pitcher/vase until the viewer gets right up on the piece. Intimacy in pottery? Please no "Ghost" jokes.
I worked for a long time to get this robin's egg blue right.

Sea Urchin Canister with Blue Interior

The interior of this canister is robin's egg blue. Its exterior is gloss white with both carved and applied decoration. The form is egg-shaped, almost 7" tall, which is big for me because I have small hands and it's hard to throw tall with child-size hands. I love the simplicity and elegance of sea urchins. The blue interior is an added surprise.

Ferns are some of my favorite plants. These fiddleheads arrived in a birthday bouquet from my husband. They're so sculptural and graceful that I had to put them to use in my pottery. This is from my "delta zen" color way. The platter measures about 14" x 5"

This birdhouse reminds me of a hat that belonged to my great grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Lee Wofford Christian, from Mansfield, LA, near Sherveport. She had this fabulous hat composed of overlapping blue velvet petals. I hadn't intended to make a birdhouse like the hat, but once it came out of the kiln, its resemblance was astounding. I wear the hat to outdoor weddings.

I love sea urchins- and this was the first teapot that I made. It's small, only enough tea for one or two tea cups full, but I was very proud of it. It also seemed quite japanese to me; as a fan of japanese pottery, I strive for the strong but calm and quiet zen that it represents

I started making herb markers to help my husband out in the garden. They've also been pretty handy for helping me remember what's planted where when the perennial herbs are dormant.

Basket of small bowls at Studio Sale

these tiny bowls are my warm-ups for throwing. I usually make a half-dozen or so before I really start making pottery, or if I need to be in the studio but don't want to be, I'll make a big batch of these instead of "real" ware. I also use them to practice new techniques- throwing, trimming, fluting, or altering.
