Snaphaunce Pistol. early 1700s. This pistol is heavily decorated with grotesque masks, busts and scrolling leaf carving. The snaphaunce was an improved version of the wheel lock and was easier to fire.

Nothing to do with the castle directly, but housed within it, is this fragment of Mammoth Tusk. Evidence of Mammoth has been found at St Fort, Fife, indicating that these huge animals roamed the tundra exposed by the retreating ice.

Broughty Castle is a historic castle in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, Scotland. It was completed around 1496, although the site was earlier fortified in 1454 when George Douglas, 4th Earl of Angus received permission to build on the site. His son Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus was coerced into ceding the castle to the crown. The main tower house forming the centre of the castle with four floors was built by Andrew, 2nd Lord Gray who was granted the castle in 1490. Broughty Castle sits imposingly at the mouth of the River Tay. It has faced many sieges and battles.

Guns BW

For many years, unbeknown to anyone, these guns were used as 'bollards' on Broughty Ferry Pier and embedded in concrete. In 1989 a visitor spotted them and realised they were rare surviving examples of Armstrong guns made between 1859 and 1866. They were extricated from the harbour in 1990 and sent to Edinburgh for conservation before being placed on display. The wooden carriages are modern copies of the type that would have supported the guns.

English Helmet. 1640-1650. Generally worn by cavalry, this type of helmet is also called a 'lobster-tailed pot' as the neck guard has overlapping plates resembling a lobster tail.

The original castle was built in the early 13th century as a defence against the Vikings.[3] By the late 13th century it had become a stronghold of the Mackenzies of Kintail (later the Earls of Seaforth). In 1511, the Macraes, as protectors of the Mackenzies, became the hereditary Constables of the Castle. Eilean Donan is the home of the Clan Macrae.
