The Abandoned House, North Iceland

It was a beautiful day when we got up in Akureyri - the northernmost city of Iceland. We had a long drive ahead of us to Reykjavik. After having breakfast at the cafe that claims to serve the best hot chocolate in Akureyri, we started driving towards the Snaefellsness Peninsula ( another picture and story from there later) . The weather was doing magic all over again just as any other day. The clouds were dramatic, and changing the light so quickly but keeping it soft for the most part giving plenty of opportunities for beautiful exposures. We found this abandoned house by the ring road. We pulled over at the closest shoulder and walked to this scene, leaving it without imprinting our camera with it would have been such a shame. And yes, 15 mins later it was raining on the next farm.

The Turf Church at Hof, South Iceland

This turf Church is located on the farm of Hof in South Iceland. There are a couple of turf churches and elf houses around this area. Turf provides better insulation from the weather, and these houses and churches were built many centuries back. Turf design is not common anymore. Infact outside Reykjavik there are not many settlements or constructions in the first place. All that is there is innumerable farm houses, sheep, horses and birds. This shot was taken early morning. You might find it hard to believe that 15 mins before this shot was taken, it was raining cats and dogs on this farm. Within 15 mins clouds parted for this patch of blue and in the next 15 minutes all the blue disappeared. This is truly Icelandic weather, it changes every 5 minutes. Icelanders always joke that the weather on the next farm might be much worse than the weather on their farm. More about Iceland weather in the coming pictures. You will see its overwhelming presence in all our pictures!

This is the first time we shot steel wool photography. In the picture, its our guide who took us to Antelope canyon in the night. We spent half the time on the night tour just outside the canyon shooting steel wool. The sky was lit up with zillions of stars, and its always a liberating experience seeing these cosmological wonders and reckoning that we are such a teeny tiny dust in their path. The orange light that you see is from the Navajo Generating Station in the distance. It is a coal powered generating station - one of the biggest in the area serving power to multiple states. The generating station was the only disruption into the invincible darkness all around.
With this picture, we are taking a short hiatus for couple of weeks. See you guys soon!

One of the most attractive features of the Antelope canyon is its curves. When the sunlight falls through the cracks, illuminating the different sections and curves differently, these curves stand out strong and beautiful. This is a bracketed shot created by combining 3 shots to capture the ultra wide dynamic range of the canyon illuminated by the sun.Capturing this dynamic range without bracketing would have been nearly impossible because of the contrast.

After a crowded busy afternoon tour in the Antelope Canyon, we were looking forward to our night visit to the Canyon. We left for the Canyon at 8:45 pm with our guide. The whole canyon was just for the three of us. The sky over the canyon was brilliantly lit with zillions of stars. I could not hear anything other than the occasional sounds of the moths attracted to my flashlight. We spent 3 hours doing light painting, still wool photography and star trails at the canyon with unbreakable solitude. It was an unforgettable night.

Upper Antelope Canyon with the Twin Sun Beams

The sun beams falling through the tiny cracks over the Upper Antelope Canyon attract thousands of tourists every summer. These beams fall from April - September as the sun needs to be high up for the beams to be noticeable. We were excited to photograph the canyon during the 2 hours that we got inside it this past Sunday. However, the crowd was crazy. There were people every where, and there was hardly any time to think and compose in the few seconds you got with no one in the frame. We met tourists from Canada, Germany and other parts of the US in Page, the little town which is a gateway to many fascinating canyons. To beat the crowd we did a night tour in the Antelope Canyon, where the whole canyon was for just the three of us ( two of us and our guide). It was a memorable experience, pictures coming soon from the night in the Canyon.

As the darkness grows, the red of the Canyon becomes overwhelming. I love the color aspect most about Zion national park - the deep red against the sunset sky is a scene photographers dream of. We are looking forward to visiting Zion again in 2 weeks hopefully and getting to go to this gem of a spot again. — at Zion National Park.

I have been chasing sunsets this whole week without a fraction of luck. Infact i went to the same spot ( not the one in the picture here), thrice and still didnt get the shot i wanted. Even though this sunset did not turn out to be a colorful one, i spent a beautiful hour by this pier hearing the ducks quack in the backwaters on the other side as darkness grew and engulfed the sea and the sky alike.

Of all man made structures, i find mighty bridges such as the Golden Gate most fascinating. Ofcourse, the view from the bridge is the icing on the top. Even though Golden Gate is an hour's drive from home, i still haven't got the perfect satisfying sunrise shot. That says a lot about this bridge. The fog, clouds, sun and wind make every sunrise unique over here, and also very challenging to capture the dream shot. In this shot ( Single shot, not an HDR), there were not many clouds, but then there was a constant influx of fog from the ocean into the bay. The scattered fog created a nice orange hue on sunrise over the entire bay. I am looking forward to my next drive up the Hawk Hill to capture another sunrise which i bet will be quite different from this one even if not my dream shot.

Denali National Park in Alaska has some strange looking mountains. These mountains seem to have a face of their own with dark impressions on uneven edges. This was shot from the Polychrome lookout on the shuttle bus tour. We got 15 mins to stop here and everyone was sprinting around with their cameras. 15 minutes is certainly not enough to sink in the beauty of this place. After Eilson Visitor Center, this was my second favorite spot on the Denali Road.

On every trip to Yosemite we end up going to Tioga Pass as a practice. However this time Tioga was closed and thus we visited the valley. It was nice to explore the valley after a long time, although most of the snow was gone. This shot was captured at Tunnel View with the drama of storm clouds unfolding over Half Dome. You see the pointed peak of half dome poking out of the clouds. This was taken a couple of hours before sunset.

Of the 2.5 days that we had in Singapore, we decided to head to the Buddha's tooth relic temple on a Saturday morning. This is definitely not among the the top tourist things to do if you have less than 3 days in Singapore, but we were fascinated by the temple architecture. The interior that you see here, was even more impressive than the exterior pagoda architecture. While B was framing this shot, i was sitting on the steps enjoying the buddhist chants in the morning. This was the first time that i heard the Buddhist chants, it took me back to the childhood days where some hindu chants would be playing on the radio on a hot summer morning. Since it was weekend, all the locals were gathered at the temple, either chanting or lighting the incense sticks outside just like Hindus do. It was spiritually refreshing to peep into the early Saturday morning life of the localities in Singapore. — in Singapore.

Inspite of the harsh winter conditions, this tree was laden with leaves. It provided a nice composition with the rocks of Monument Valley in the background on a clear day. Seems like that this tree was taking life one day at a time, hoping for the harsh winter to subside before it lost all its beautiful leaves. Sometimes, thats what we need, among testing conditions and situations take life one day at a time. Keep going on till something works out. If nothing does, there will be spring again next year and it will bring back the new leaves. Life runs on hope...

The Amphitheater of Bryce

This part of Bryce Canyon National Park is rightly called the amphitheater. The beautiful hoodoos springing from the canyon floor put up a great show every day from sunrise until sunset. The variation in their color as the sun completes its east to west journey is exhilarating. Sunrise brings out the subtle orange and yellow shades. As the day progresses, these hoodoos exhibit bright colors under the shining sun. Sunset paints the top of these structures in golden yellows. This shot was taken from inspiration point looking into the amphitheater. Although Bryce Canyon is smaller than Grand Canyon, it has more colors and interesting formations springing from the ground that leave the visitors smitten by its beauty. So if you have visited only Grand Canyon and were in awe of it, there is some thing equally spectacular if not more waiting to be discovered.

Gardens by the Bay, a new attraction in Singapore is a part of Singapore government's plan to transform Singapore into a city in a garden. This is the exterior of the spectacular flower dome in the Gardens by the Bay. The sun was setting after a few hours of rain and storm in the afternoon. Singapore is definitely on track to realize its goal of being a city in a garden.

Darkness over Racetrack in Death Valley

Wandering Tripod posted a photo:

I reckoned why this national park is called Death Valley and why this dry lake bed is called the Racetrack only after I got there. Getting to racetrack is not trivial, a bone jostling 2 hour journey over a dirt road from the Ubehebe Crater that passes a pretty Joshua Tree field gets you to the Racetrack. We got here at 1pm and spent the rest of the day until 8 in the night here. Once the sun went down the horizon on the mountains, racetrack literally froze like ice. We waited for an hour and a half for the sky to get dark completely. Special thanks to Nitya for waiting patiently with us. Once the stars came out, it was a spectacular scene. Even though there was 60% moon, the sky seemed primordial and virtuous. I also saw a shooting star which was a punch of excitement in the cold. We couldn't believe the fact that we were the only 3 humans on the entire racetrack under the stars - that feeling was immense. Finally we left the tripod with all the settings to do its job and returned to the warmth of the car. After an hour and a half, we saw a fox outside the car and we were instantly worried about the camera on the racetrack. All 3 of us picked up our hiking poles and set out to the middle of the racetrack to rescue the camera and the tripod, making loud yells to keep the fox away. Overall an unforgettable night on our packed day of over16 hours of being outdoors.
