Eagle, pride or humility!

Craig Wilson Photography posted a photo:

Direction and quality of light:
Eagle statue with diffused over head reflected light from on camera flash. Small hard feature light to create background shadow lower right, also gave some small crisp texture highlights.

Comments:
With the mood of the statue being one of a very stark/hard predictor. I wanted to bring out both those features and more by the less confrontational side on profile pose. By using the space created next to the curve of the wing/body/rock, I've transferred a complimentary curve of a down turned head, that could almost be bowing. The statue with it's blind eyed stare, in contrast to the angled flat headed shadow, helps enforce the contrast between the two forms of the same subject.

Difficulties:
I was limited with the equipment and environment I had to use and would have liked to be able to have more space around the image. This and my need to keep shadows for the assignment, meant I could neither crop or pull back to create a more balanced composition.

My overall assessment:

Pro: Contrasting lines worked well and I achieved what I had wanted with the shadow showing a different aspect of the subject. The softer overhead lighting gave a reasonable amount of texture with some about of shadows still showing.

Con: As I said above, I would have liked to compose the image differently but was unable to.

Summation: Under the circumstances, this was probably the best I could do. I may revisit this in the future when resources allow it. For now I'm happy with the result, but feel it shows the lighting that the assignment required.

10 step sequence of a western Australian Pelican in flight. You can see the flapping cycle of its flight here, it also has a glide stage after gaining altitude which is in the wing shape of the last frame/stage shown (top left). The sequence was taken just next to Penguin Island, Rockingham, Perth, Western Australia.
