One of the more elusive little forest birds of the west coast, easily mistaken for Hutton's Vireo. They are constantly in motion; getting more than two seconds to focus is unusual. Along the banks of Muir Creek, southern Vancouver Island, BC.

The bare branches of a Red Alder show reddish catkins, a sure sign of early spring. I liked the way the black water in the background allowed this spindly tree's shape to show clearly. Elk Falls Provincial Park, near Campbell River, Vancouver Island, BC.

On the road tonight, in a motel in Valemount, British Columbia. I'm having a phenomenal trip; lots of wildlife. Prior to leaving home, I prepared a number of images to upload to Flickr when I had the time - and internet access; here is the first one.

I made this shot just over a year ago in Cowichan River Provincial Park, near Duncan on Vancouver Island. At the time I wondered if the design here would be too simple, but I think the heavily textured drying mud adds a necessary, additional element of interest.

Reflections of alder branches in still pond at dusk, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Complexity! Looking at this scene, I realized there was no way to simplify it visually, so I decided to allow the very complex pattern of criss-crossing branches and tree trunks to be what they are: impenetrable. 1994 photo.

A roadside stop in East Sooke, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. I was entranced by the subtlety and delicacy of the light. Recently, when processing the scan of this old photo, I had to remind myself not to artificially pump in too much contrast: fog reduces contrast, and it was exactly that softness I wanted to retain.

I shot this image with a black and white conversion in mind. It was early morning at Muir Beach, and the sun was still behind a hump of land; the light was blue and quite flat. Importing the RGB file into Photoshop, I adjusted various channels until I had the desired effect - essentially lightened the blue channel and darkened everything else. This made the pale alder trunks and branches - which carried a blue cast from the open shade - stand out. I felt that I had included too many foreground rocks in the original framing, so I cropped a little from the bottom. This eliminated any distraction that might draw attention away from the trees and branches.

I made this shot in 1991 on my first roll of Velvia. Funny how a new film or camera body or lens can inspire... everywhere I looked that day I saw image possibilities that I would have otherwise overlooked. The trick, of course, is one of perception; there is never a shortage of image potential, only a shortage of imagination... Scanned from the original Fujichrome Velvia slide, January 1991.

Sunlit trees in the forest are a killer to photograph; they appear spectacular to the naked eye, but are usually impossibly complex. So, I decided to keep the depth of field very shallow by shooting with a wide f-stop, creating an impression of the tree rather than trying to show the entire tree. It would have been too much!

Catkins hung from all the red alder trees, and littered the forest floor and the margins of a little stream that ran through the greening understory. Why choose this one out of all the thousands of similar ones? I don't know, except that it caught my eye, and I responded to something. I loved the surface tension of the water, and the soft lighting; the shapes, lines, textures.
