A lone buzzard I saw today when visiting Kilvington Lakes for the first time.
I also saw oystercatchers, wigeons, a snipe, a great crested grebe and a red kite!

A long-tailed tit we spotted while walking through Great High Wood in Durham. Funnily enough, we were actually searching for hungry ducks to feed at the time but we had to walk over 2 miles down the river before finding a single duck! We also were lucky enough to see a large group of siskins.

This was the first time I've ever photographed bullfinches! We were lucky to see around 6 males and several females from the woodland hide.

We visited WWT Washington Wetland Centre the other day. We were lucky enough to see 7 avocets while there; almost a record breaker for the reserve! The centre also holds one of the largest groups of nesting grey herons in Europe. Despite it being bitterly cold and having to break the bank for the public transport to get there, we had a lovely day!

In other news, I got a place on the MSc Biological Photography and Imaging course for 2013-2014 in Nottingham! Very pleased! :)

I'm applying to do an MSc course in biological photography and imaging next academic year. A friend, who is currently on the course, showed me around campus yesterday. It seemed really good and I got a good vibe from it! I got to have a look at the museum including the insect collections and take a couple of photos for myself.
Fingers crossed! I hope I get a place...

Aerial Battle

I was watching this kestrel hunting over the field next to our house today, when several crows spotted him. Crows are extremely protective of their territories and readily attack birds of prey that dare to fly too close. Quite a few of them mobbed him while he was minding his own business hunting! Even a couple of magpies joined in.

I managed to get this from the comfort from the house, which is fortunate as it's raining all day and I have uni work to do...

This blue tit was very busy hopping from twig to twig. There has been a lot of bird activity and the field next door despite the grim weather! Chaffinches, tits, dunnocks, blackbirds and even a little wren came to say hi!

We're very lucky to live only a few minutes from these beautiful views. I took Miffy for a walk down to the river at sunset the other day in the cold frosty weather. The sky turned pink! She happily posed for a photo against the glorious sky.

I'm back home for Christmas! I went out into the garden yesterday because the sun and frost combo was beautiful (which also meant a great sunset - photo to come soon). I spent ages photographing frozen leaves and grass but only noticed this moss on the way back into the house. Turns out this was the best photo! As they say, the beauty is in the detail.

The squirrel that destroys my feeders and steals the food. I guess it doesn't help that the holes are big enough for him to reach through!
That said, I do feel like he needs a bit of help in the coming winter too...

Autumn is a beautiful season, probably my favourite. The leaves this year seem more vivd than usual. I loved the light illuminating these leaves in Durham on a sunny day.

I forgot to move my broken seed feeder (bloody squirrel!) from the garden yesterday which meant our little friend here was very happy indeed! 3 or 4 of them tucked into the remaining bird seed.

I photographed this robin a few weeks ago while still in Nottingham at Attenborough Nature Reserve. He was extremely friendly and hopped onto this twig only a metre or so from Waheed and I as we snapped furiously.

Not the best of photos but I like it.
