Cape Blanco Lighthouse

Cape Blanco, in Oregon, is the furthest point west on the continental United States. This lighthouse was built in 1870. It holds four Oregon records: it is the oldest continuously operating light, it is the most westerly, it has the highest focal plane above the sea (256 feet), and it had Oregon’s first woman keeper, Mabel E. Bretherton, when she signed on in March 1903. It has seen it's share of shipwrecks too.

This lovely lady has graced my livingroom for years, and although she is a creature of the sea, she had never been there. So I took her. Yeah, I know, pretty weird. Now I have two models, my wife Terry, ...and a piece of resin. I'm not saying who is easier to work with. LOL!

This is the most impressive stretch of coastline we've ever seen. It's near Brookings, Oregon which is real close to the southern border. For those that wish an easy stroll, you can do that, and for those that enjoy hiking and climbing, there's some of that too. What we found fascinating was that the waves were large and cresting about 20 feet away, and yet they died out at our feet due to the steep slope of the beach at the water's edge. The state campground there is beautiful.

Terry posing in front of a 2-8-2 Saddle Tanker from the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad. It was used by a lumber company back in it's working days. Now it does excursions through gorgeous Washington countryside. Terry loves all steam trains but this one is special. She says she loves the sounds... the chuff of steam, the clang of the bell, the click of the tracks, and the soft hiss and gentle ping, ping, when it's at idle.

Crater Lake, Oregon, a natural lake created after the eruption of Mt. Mazama over 7,000 years ago. No inlets at all, created and sustained entirely by rain and melted snow. The deepest point is nearly 2,000 feet, the deepest lake in the United States. The blue that you see is the blue that it is. That is not photoshopped or enhanced. At it's widest point it is 6 miles across, with 20 square miles of surface area. Photos cannot even begin to do this place justice. Not even close. Each time we step up to the edge of the crater and see it, it is just as overwhelmingly large and beautiful as seeing it for the first time. They have boat tours in the crater, we did this one year and it was spectacular.

The Wreck Of The Peter Iredale

The Peter Iredale, a British 4 masted steel sailing ship built in 1890, bound for Portland, Oregon, ran aground in Oct. 1906 just south of the mouth of the Columbia River on what is now called Clatsop Spit. Before it could be towed back to sea and refloated, it sank into the sand and became immovable. Over the decades it has remained mostly buried with very little above sand, but several years ago stormy weather washed much of the sand away, revealing an amazing skeleton easily viewed. On hearing the news of this, our love for old sailing ships spurred us on to see this before the sea covered much of it back over again in sand.

Finley Wildlife Refuge Historic Barn

This barn was built in the early 1900's and is now used to store historical farm equipment. Other historical buildings share the protected land which is part of the Finley Wildlife Refuge, south of Corvallis, Oregon, which was set aside for the needs of wintering Canadian geese. Fields of wildlife food crops are interspersed with wetlands along with forested areas of douglas fir, oak, ash, old-growth maples, and other native trees.
