The Guiding Light

Daniel Borg posted a photo:

So this will be my last picture from Barcelona, although I do have one or two more in the archives which I may bring out at a later date. I didn’t take as many pictures out there as I would have liked while we were in Barcelona (although I’m sure that my girlfriend would tell you different story) but it was a short family break.

This was taken on the same morning as Final Destination and to be honest it was the reason why I got up so early… this is Fontana Metro station and as soon as I saw it I just had to take this picture; my girlfriend couldn’t understand my excitement when we walked through here but I love the clean lines that the lights create.

I do have another from here with a single person in the frame and I was very undecided as to which one to upload, so a big shout out to Martin Turner for helping me choose, although I may upload the other one on a rainy day :-)

Also I’d like to thank everyone for their comments and faves on my last upload… it made No 2 on explore, I've never had one get that high before!!

Have a great day all :-)
Barri Gotic Cathedral

It’s been a while since my last upload, so I thought that I’d better show my face before you all start deleting me LOL

This is another shot from my trip to Barcelona and it was taken inside the very old (12th century) and rather stunningly beautiful cathedral called “La Sue Cathedral” which is located in the heart of Barcelona’s gothic quarter. Whilst I’ve been to Barcelona many times before this my first visit here, in fact when we arrived it was closed and it didn’t look like it was going to open its doors anytime soon. Anyway after a short break chilling out from a mornings walking and soaking up the sun the doors opened and I hot footed it in there.

As you can imagine it was rather dark in there and they have a “No Tripod” policy… although I did manage to set my tripod up and fire off some frames I was kind of finding it difficult to line everything up just the way that I wanted whilst being inconspicuous, so I went hand held instead.

I do have another from here but I’ll keep that it the archives for later in the year…

Sorry for being such a rubbish contact of late… I’ll get around to all of your streams over the next day or so!!
Final Destination

When I found out that we were going to Barcelona this tunnel was a must have for my collection, not only is it the longest Metro/Underground interchange that I know of but strangely enough it hold lots of very fond memories…

Passeig de Gracia has metro 3 lines running through it and this tunnel connects L3 and L4, it’s a really horrible space… long and narrow with a very low ceiling, it’s rather claustrophobic; and very busy (well usually it is), so busy in fact that you can’t even see the end of the tunnel.

I took this with and without people and it really did look better with the lone person, believe it or not it’s harder capturing a single figure than anything else, and when the tunnel is this long you have to wait for an awful long time to have another go if you this the shot!

Happy Easter all, I’ll visit your stream shortly.
Sagrada Familia

So it’s been ages since I’ve uploaded something to flickr, but I’ve been so busy at work that I didn’t think that it was fair for me to upload photos without commenting on your streams…

This was taken on my recent trip to Barcelona and it’s the interior of “La Sagrada Familia” (here is the exterior of this wonderful cathedral double vision) , the last time I was here it was nothing but a building site and it was a pleasant surprise to see this in all of it’s grandeur; it is a truly beautiful ceiling, there is so much detail to take in and this photo doesn’t do it any justice what so ever. I wanted to try and fit the whole ceiling in one photo so that I could capture the crucifix type shape that is in the centre of the image.

I’ve not been out with my camera since I got back from Barcelona, this weather in the UK over the last month has been shocking, still hopefully it’ll clear up soon and I can get some new stuff ☺

Have a great week ahead all and I promise that I’ll get around to your streams soon!
Double Vision

Daniel Borg posted a photo:

I’ve just got back from a fabulous week in Barcelona which my girlfriend booked as a surprise for our 10 year anniversary, I’d already been there on seven previous occasions with work and holidays with friends but my last visit was around 9 years ago and I was really looking forward to see how the city had changed…

We were lucky enough to have an apartment a stone’s throw from Barcelona and Gaudi’s most iconic landmark… the “Sagrada Familia” (Sacred Family) which had really changed since my last visit.

I spent 2 evenings shooting this and the conditions on both occasions weren’t ideal, on the first night the sky was completely clear and that coupled with someone being in the spot that I wanted to use meant that it was a dry run; this was taken on my second attempt, I got down there nice and early and I was really looking forward to shooting, the sky was looking good and I was where I wanted to be… the conditions didn’t last though, as the sun set and the lights came on the clouds moved into place… oh hum.

This is a really tight composition, I had my camera as low as it would go and it was a struggle fitting everything in the frame, the end of the reflection finished at right at the edge of the pond; I’d also thought about cloning the cranes out but with the uneven tones in the sky it was proving difficult but I also like the way that cranes are illuminated… I guess a visit in 2026 (estimated completion date) might be in order.

So I’m massively behind with what everyone’s been up to; give me a couple of days to catch up with all of your streams, have a great evening ☺

Revenage of The Fallen

I visited this location a few times in the past and I posted a shot from here year early last year (Cold and Frosty Morning), I’d always planned on returning to reshoot as I quite liked the tree that used to stand proud in the field… unfortunately during some strong winds early last year the tree was blown over... hence the title.

This was taken a few Saturdays back when there was snow still lying in the fields, it was the only clear morning that we had during the period of cold weather so I decided to get out there and see if I could get a sunrise; it was particularly cold on this morning I had two pairs of gloves on and my hands were still cold.

Ideally there would have been some clouds in the sky as plain skies can be rather boring…

Anyway have a great evening all… I'm getting around to your streams!
Diagonals

During my weekend in Bristol with Martin Turner and Paul C Stokes we decided to get up early on Sunday morning to try and catch a sunrise even though the weather forecast looked bleak… and the forecasters were spot on as the skies were flat and grey. So instead of wasting time outside we went looking for refuge and somewhere to get breakfast and we were also needing kill time until the “M-Shed” opened its doors.

Inside this museum there’s a rather abstract staircase and I shot this at all sorts of angles and points of view… normally I’d grab a couple of frames, review them on my computer and then go back with a composition in mind but that wasn’t really viable in this case!
This is probably my favourite of the bunch; I like the weird angles and diagonal lines/lights.

I’ve still got one from the sunset at Weston that I want to upload, but I’ve not managed to process it yet.

Also many thanks for all of the kind comments on my last upload... it's one of my personal favourites!!

Have a great evening all, if I’m behind on your stream I’ll get around to it ;-)
First off we started off shooting in Bristol but after an hour or so we made it over to Weston-Super-Mare to catch a sunset. There were some very nice looking clouds in the sky and I was really looking forward to grabbing a rare sunset picture to add to my collection; unfortunately it was low tide so there wasn’t the opportunity to get a perfect reflection of the pier but I decided to try and see what the wet sand would offer.

Many thanks very much guys for driving me around!!!

I’ve got a few more pictures to go through but after a long journey home, the travelling has finally caught up with me, so I’ll have to take a look at these later in the week.

On Saturday I met up with Baggers 2013 to try and make use of what was a lovely looking day but just as we headed out the clouds came over and scuppered our plans; although we still went out, to see if we could get anything worthwhile!

Anyway while we were chatting we got on to the subject of symmetry and the fact that we have both tried shooting at strange angles but the results never seem to look the way that we would like them too… I’ve tried numerous angles in the past, generally when I shoot anything with symmetry I’ll try the same shot but with an angle and these to my eyes look terrible!

What I can’t work out is if I don’t like it because I’m so used to lining everything up or it genuinely looks rubbish. I have contacts who every now and again will throw in a shot with a strange angle and their shots look great…

I took this yesterday evening, I promise that I didn’t go out with the intention of shooting the London Underground but the wind was kicking up and the sky was too clear and boring…

Please tell me what you think, it’ll be good to hear your feedback… it’s nearly the weekend… yay, have a great one whatever you’re all doing!!

Sunday seems to be the only day that I’m posting at the moment, I’m hoping that the weather will improve enough so that I can get out after work, although it looks like a week of rain is on the way…

Anyway back to the shot, this is inside the British Museum and it’s a staircase that I’ve photographed from the top looking down (the ghost) and that seems to be most peoples choice of POV for this staircase.
I’ve tried this shot numerous times but it’s very dim at the bottom and getting sharp shot isn’t easy, but the symmetry is crying out to be shot… it’s not my favourite photo from the British Museum but this is a POV that’s rarely seen on flickr!

Works kind of busy at the moment and I’m behind on your streams again, but I’m making my way through them… Have a great evening and week ahead.

The Weather in the UK has been fairly miserable over the last few weeks, horribly cold and now snow has arrived, I like the snow but the sky is like a plain grey blanket and the only thing that is good for is building a snowman :-)

Anyway with the snowman (or snowbear in our case) built and I’m back in the warmth it’s time to return to the archives and another from the Open House weekend, this is the inside of the Lloyds building and a POV that has been shot to death, I do have another photo from here for whom the bell tolls which includes the Lutine Bell.

I do have more recent stuff on the HDD but I really want to re-shoot these so uploads are going to be few and far between until the weather and the icy ground make it safe enough for me to commute into town with my gear.

My first upload of 2013 so I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year!
It’s been a slow start to the year… I haven’t been out with the camera yet, the weather has been poor and work has been surprisingly busy.

I took a trip into London with flickr friends Baggers 2012 and Liesel the weather was poor but it was nice to get out and about after being stuck indoors over Christmas.

We decided to go to the imperial war museum and having never been there before we didn’t know what to expect… one thing that I would say is that there’s an incredible waste of space, everything is squashed at one end, perhaps they were in-between exhibitions?

I took a couple of versions here, one with the human element and one without, but I felt that the lone person worked here, I did have a photo with a lady as the human element and while this balanced the image out a little better I didn’t like the composition.

Hopefully I’ll get out with the camera next week, I do have some stuff from last year to upload but I might re-shoot these!!

If I haven’t already caught up with your streams I will do over the coming days, enjoy a lazy Sunday!
A Touch of Pink

Daniel Borg posted a photo:

My last upload of the year and another dip into the achieves, this was taken way back in February a week before valentines day and this is reason for the pink display box towards the centre of the picture.

It was really cold on this day as the UK had just had a cold front and a bout of snow, in fact you can still see some snow on the ground…

You aren’t really allowed to use tripods in this area, but I managed to get away with a 6-minute exposure, although I did get jumped on by security just after taking this!

The trouble with this view is that the London Eye is so big that even at 10mm on a crop sensor it still isn’t wide enough to fit everything in properly. Some would say that it's a very touristy shot I do like the POV and I’ll re-take it if I ever get a wider setup than 16mm.

It’s been an absolute joy viewing all of your streams over the past 12 months, I’ve met some great people and through all of your comments and criticisms I feel that I’ve improved too.

I’ll sign off wishing you all a joyful Christmas and a very happy new year, see you in 2013 :-)
Space Station

Daniel Borg posted a photo:

Another dip into the archives here, infact I’d totally forgotten that I had it until Vulture Labs posted his version of it a few weeks back… I think that the main reason why I’ve hung on to it for so long is because I was really unsure how to process it; to be honest I'm still not too sure about this so I'll let you lot decide!

This was taken very early on a Saturday morning at Kings Cross station, it’s the main tunnel, which takes you to the Piccadilly line, and it gets very busy.

I’d tried taking this on several occasions prior to this but there were too many people around for my liking; this is the one and only time that I’ve seen this area totally empty (apart from me of course ☺) although I don’t use the underground that much these days. I think that the only other passageway that I’ve seen as busy as this is the interchange at Green Park!

Probably my second to last post before Christmas… I hope that you’ve got all of your shopping done ;-)

Enjoy the rest of the week and the weekend; I’ll catch up with your streams tomorrow!

Something a little different form the symmetry that I’ve been uploading of late…

With a few days off work (starting yesterday) I was hoping to spend the day in London doing some photography but the weather wasn’t very kind and it rained all day so maybe I’ll save that for Tuesday instead… although I do need to do some Christmas shopping at some point too. Anyway with the rubbish weather I thought that it would be a good opportunity to do some waterdrop photography instead.

I’ve always loved this genre of photography the shapes that can be achieved are just amazing… up to now I’ve just captured simple collisions and with electronics controlling the timing a standard collision is fairly easy and this is my reason for not posting any waterdrops of late…

These high collisions are quite difficult to control and predict, I’ve had limited success in the past but nothing that was worth posting and while this needs improvement in certain areas it’s my best effort to date… ☺

I must apologise once again for not being very active on your streams, but it’s been a busy week with the festive season in full swing, I’ll catch up with you all over the weekend. Have a great day!!!

It’s been a while since my last post but I’ve been scratching around for images to upload… I do have some in the archives but they are of locations that don’t offer anything new so I’ll save them for a later date.

This is a shot that’s been on my mind for some time… but Kings Cross is so busy that it’s tough finiding it people free.
Anyway I was on my way back from visiting a few underground stations (a trip which was cut short by someone jumping on to the tracks at green park… no one was hurt though) and I was walking along this passageway when I noticed that it was quiet… everyone seemed to have disappeared! So I grabbed my camera in anticipation and got a few shots off, I’m not the quickest at composing a shot but on this occasion time was of the essence.

As for the processing I’m well aware that selective colour isn’t to everyone’s taste but I think that it kind of works here… however I’d be interested to hear your thoughts!

By now I’m sure that you’ll all recognise this location as it’s already featured on my stream twice over the last 6 weeks or so... Canada Blue and Canada Square

The guys have uploaded their blue hour shots from here so I’m not going to bore you all with another one (but I may save it for another time LOL)… instead I’ve chosen to process a shot that was taken just as the sun was going down (which can’t be seen here), I love how calm the water is here the reflections are just amazing!!

So the Canon 6D has finally been released and the initial internet murmurings are that it’s a good camera… looking forward to the real reviews before hopefully buying one!!

So back to my photo walk with flickr friend Aaron Yeoman, I was fairly disappointed with most of the photos that I took on the day but I did like this one…

I love the art deco here the up-lighters give the station a real sense of age, but I guess that this is what makes the London Underground so interesting; every station has something different about it.
This station was designed and built in the early 1930s so I went for a kind of sepia processing, not sure if it totally works though… also the symmetry could be better, Aaron and myself both struggled to line our shots up and this was the best that I could do :-)

Sorry for not commenting over the last few days but I was away with work, I’m also out all day tomorrow so if I don’t catch up with your streams tonight I will do at some point over the weekend… have a great one ;-)

Daniel Borg posted a photo:

So a little dip into the archives, not that I need to but with fellow Flickr contacts uploading similar photos I thought that it might be a good opportunity to post some old stuff that I’ve got lying around.

I took this back in March when I had to come into work on a Saturday so I decided on a really early start to try some underground photography. You’ve all probably seen this passageway before but I was really excited when I came across it as I’d never seen it before and it appeared to go on forever.

Ideally there would have been a person walking down here but with a travelators either side of this walkway the chances of capturing someone foolish to walk down it would be a long shot. I’ve been back here to re-shoot this with my fisheye but there were too many people and the shot looked cluttered but I'll give it another go at some point.

I do have another passageway shot from the said morning sitting on my HDD but VL beat me in posting it so it’ll have to sit and wait for another day ;-)

Have a great day all.

On Wednesday I met up with flickr friend Aaron Yeoman for a photo walk, the weather was pretty dire so we stuck to indoor locations… mainly the underground.
We also visited a car park just off Bond Street to photograph this stairwell, we stood at the very bottom to take this and the space to operate in was very limited and composition was tough to say the least.

I was unsure whether or not to go for a weird angle or to go for straight lines… as you’ve probably guessed by now I don’t do weird angles, not because I don’t like them but they never seem to work the way I’d like them too.

It was great meeting you Aaron :-)

Hopefully you’ve all had a great week and are looking forward to the weekend, whatever you’re up to have a good one ;-)
