Tim Yeo MP speaking at the Lavenham Big Climate Reconnection Public meeting

The purpose of the meeting was to connect our community with our MP and draw to his attention the issues we all face in the area of climate change.

Some 150 + people drawn across the local area attended and included Transition and similarly inclined groups, such as Green Hadleigh. The meeting was chaired by Roy Whitworth, Chairman of Lavenham Parish Council.

The evening started with a presentation by Craig Bennet, Friends of the Earth’s Director of Policy and Campaigns, who set-out the global and national priorities to tackle climate change. He underscored the urgency needed by central and local government to act and stop prevaricating. Time is not on our side. Central government had set out to be the greenest government ever. Actions such as stopping airport growth were to be welcomed. Other policies such as the adoption of a new generation of nuclear powered electricity generation power stations sent mixed and confused messages. A consistent green agenda is still awaited.

Will Hitchcock followed by setting out the twin aims of the Transition movement to; tackle climate change and build resilience into the local economy as the production of fossil fuels and oil in particular peak. Reliance on a more local sustainable economy is the way forward.
As a practical example of Transition in action he outlined the achievements of Transition Nayland had achieved over the last two years and the success of their Green Nayland initiative to put photo voltaic panels on the roof of Nayland Primary School. This is inspirational to the children and parents alike and is a model for others to follow.

Our own MP and Chairman of the Parliamentary Energy and Climate Change Committee Tim Yeo, explained his committee’s independent role in this area and the scrutiny of the current Energy Bill. This can sometimes lead to conflict with government. He was aware that in some areas he would like them to move faster. He saw current planning control as a barrier to moving local initiatives along. The Green Deal is an important part of the Bill and will give direct help to all to make homes more energy efficient.

In response to a question the panel agreed that the recent abandonment of nuclear generation by Germany would give that country a commercial competitive edge.

Questioned on the planning system they all agreed that it needed updating urgently. The panel also commented on the pressing need for local authorities to be handed down climate change targets and to be more sympathetic towards green development proposals in conservation areas such as Lavenham.

Transition Lavenham was also able to announce two pieces of good news.
Firstly, it has reached agreement with Lavenham Parish Council to provide public allotments, and secondly that Babergh District Council had given the green light for a full planning application to go forward to put photo voltaic panels on the roof of the village hall.

The outcome of the meeting was to solidify the otherwise vague concept of Transition within the bigger picture and to hear tangible evidence from Nayland of inspirational action.

Lavenham Big Climate Reconnection Public meeting: Audience
