jenniferbeinhacker.com posted a photo:

the man in the green (striped) suit

assemblage: in wood fruit box, water color paint, metallic paint, doll head, plastic doll, plastic (army) action figures, marble, xerox paper, tumbled glass, beads, cord, mesh.

the mesh that usually covers the box has been lifted up to the top so that i could take a photograph. when i hang the piece i will lower the mesh.

the photograph is taken head on. therefore the sides, which are painted and collaged are not shown in this photograph.

i like using tangerine boxes.
after enjoying the fruit i get to use the box for small intimate art pieces.
friends and family also give me their boxes after they are done with the fruit.

SEE FIRST COMMENT, IF YOU WISH, FOR OTHER ART IN TANGERINE BOXES
the wood that this piece is from an earlier piece i made. it was a much larger piece.
i took apart the original piece , broke it into several components and put it back again. of course most of the elements in this piece are new and not "recycled".
i sometimes do this when i feel a piece either needs to be re-worked or else given "a new face" (so to speak).

mandala 1

mixed media on wood: dolls (some weathered in my garden), one wrapped in hospital casting material), acrylic paint, twine, nails, carpet tacks, beads, bone, shells, spider, doll heads, collaged paper. straight pins, safety pins

36" round X 5" depth
i was taking a walk and came across, in the trash, two of these round wood pieces. the shapes appealed to me immediately.
they sat in my studio for ages until i finally figured out what i wanted to do with them.
i am currently working on the second piece of wood which will be a companion piece to this.

because i photographed it head on some of the pieces do not show up as clearly as they do when you are actually looking at it.
the "dark" color of some of the dolls is because i "plant" them in my garden and let sun, wind, rain, snow age them.
and yes...i did rip off the heads!
blood series 8: imagine it

jenniferbeinhacker.com posted a photo:

blood series 8: imagine it

mixed media on wood: acrylic paint, collage
24" x 24"

EXPLANATION OF THIS PIECE:

all of my "blood series" paintings have "blood" dripping on them. i fully intended to drip "blood" on this painting also. when i finished the painting i saw that the black (background) paint had crackled. i like the crackle so much that i decided not to add "blood" to this painting. i felt it would detract from the crackle and also overload the painting..
but this painting is part of the "blood series"...so....hence the title: "blood series 8: IMAGE IT. in other words..imagine the "blood".
explanation of this piece:

i do not know if this ever happens to you all in flickr-land, but there are times when i have a no idea what art piece i want to create. a sort of "writer's block" of the paint brushes!!!

when this happens to me i just make "anything".....telling myself it does not have to be "great art" (LOL)..just do something to get my creative juices flowing (so to speak).
well.i was experiencing one of those "dreaded" blocks and this is what i made to deal with it.
when this happens i am sometimes pleased with what i have created..and sometimes i just laugh at myself and put it away.
i thought i would share with you all the art piece that resulted from my most recent "bump in the road"!!!
mixed media: on found wood, photograph of doll (that i have taken in roadside flea market), tumbled glass (found on the beach), silk ribbon, shell, acrylic paint

"lonely: 1" felt lonely...so i made her a friend!

EXPLANATION OF THE PIECE:

this past summer i was traveling down a back road in utah and saw a old baby doll sitting on the front porch of an antique store. i was drawn to her.
since i have so many old baby dolls sitting in my art studio, and little room for another, i decided to take a photograph of her so i could remember her.
she looked so lonely to me (hence the title). perhaps lonely for her "long ago" little girl owner?
when i came home i knew i wanted to make an art piece to remember her.
i "worked on" the colors of the photograph to suit the painted wood.

and here she is.....lonely.

i received this email (below) on my website a few weeks ago:

We ran across your website and thought you might be interested in our upcoming Project. We are Art in Hand˙, an arts publisher looking to bring our City Project Decks of cards to the city of Washington, DC. We are seeking 54 artists who are currently living and working in the Washington, DC area to participate in our next City Project Deck.

The Washington, DC Project will be a deck of fully functional playing cards where each individual card in the deck (plus 2 jokers) is rendered in the typical style of the contributing artist. The project will create widespread exposure for participating artists while producing a unique, entertaining, functional and green product for the city of Washington, DC.

We are seeking artists of 2-dimensional art in any style or medium and from as many different neighborhoods and districts within Washington, DC area as possible.

Accepted artists will be assigned one card from the deck and asked to produce an original piece of work that clearly represents their designated card, that represents some aspect (be it overt or subtle) of Washington, DC and that is created in their own unique style.

There will be no fee for participation but accepted artists will be asked to sign a letter of commitment as well as submit a high res TIFF of the image in exchange for a one-time royalty payment in product. Artists are free to keep their original image.

Interested artists should submit an email to info@artinhandcards.com, include a short bio and a link to a website where their work can be easily viewed or 2-3 sample image files representative of their work. Please include the title: Washington, DC Project Artist in the subject line of your email.

If you are accepted to the project, we will contact you asap and send you an information package that should answer all your questions.

For more information or to view other City Projects, please visit our website, www.artinhandcards.com.

Thanks for considering being part of this very fun and unique project.

i replied and was accepted. i was given the QUEEN OF CLUBS as my card;

EXPLANATION OF THIS CARD:

my card is allegorical. it addresses the situation of female political figures (the queen) in the male dominated washington political arena (the clubs). the heads in the corners represents the extremes of the right and left, the physical challenges to women as well as the unreasoned demands and attacks from special interests of all kinds. birds are omens. on an allegorical level, the bird can be seen as either the
embodiment of the disturbing and shattering forces that threaten all female political figures or as a winged messenger of hope. the queen herself lacks any indication of her femaleness (no body, no clothes) – there is too much emphasis on the appearance of female politicians and not enough on their views and accomplishments. and the dancing children-- politics in washington is a game which you need to learn regardless of gender- to be “a player.”

i will, as a surprise (shhhh!), give david a deck or two of cards when it is printed (i think in march). since david is a card player i think he will enjoy this little gift of playing poker with his friends using art cards, of which is mother will be one. don't tell him!
