In this photo I'm trying to make the connection between the power of the sea, the tragedy of life lost and the remembering of what was likely important in the life of the surfer. By cropping the photo long and narrow It allows you to see the whole scene in one place.

There are four interesting features in this photo that draw interest to it. First is the clouds in the sky. Then the bokeh in the center of the photo. Next is the silhouette of the pier on the 1/3 line and finally in the bottom is a strong mirror image reflection of the pier.

In this picture I wanted to capture the breadth of the sky and the variations in color both in the sky and on the wet sand. The width is twice the length to accomplish this goal.

There is so much texture on the sand in this photo that the crop lets me emphasize. As a way to bring some interest in the photo I tried to place the photographer on the 1/3 verticle line and the pier on the 1/3 horizontal line. It provides a nice geometrical feature to the image.
