The £6.6m new River Hull swing bridge opened today, after some time...For a start, a £100 million residential, office and leisure development it was meant to be a part of never got off the ground. Instead, the Boom project on the east bank of the river fell victim to the economic downturn, leaving just a multi-storey car park and a new Premier Inn hotel perched on top. Then came a change of government and the abolition of regional development agency Yorkshire Forward, which had provided the funding for the project. Delays caused by uncertainty over that funding and tweaks to the bridge's ambitious design, which required further additional planning consents, were further hiccups along the line. Councillor Steven Bayes, the city council's portfolio holder for regeneration, said: "The bridge is something we have inherited rather than promoted ourselves as a council."It was very much Yorkshire Forward's idea and was always intended to be a link to the Boom. Now we are where we are. "There are still a lot of development opportunities along the River Hull corridor but, while the recession continues, it's unlikely that we are going to see anything happening down there."The bridge will be a good way of getting to the hotel from the Old Town and it's another way of reaching The Deep. "The positive thing is that, in infrastructure terms, it's there now and we will not need to build another one in the foreseeable future." Councillor Bayes said talks were also continuing with the Homes and Communities Agency over the land once earmarked for the Boom development. Landscaping work is being carried out on the east bank immediately next to the new bridge but the long-term future of the former Boom site stretching towards Myton Bridge remains uncertain. The site was acquired by Yorkshire Forward and then transferred to the Homes and Communities Agency shortly before the development agency was abolished in April. ...or...seeing the light! Anyway from a recent trip to Spurn, cut short by the fact the causeway road had been totally swept away by the sea. No lighthouse then, settled for these groynes near the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust cafe. 2 stop nd grad (h), a polariser and the Big Stopper

Take II...still breezy when I rocked up but not as bad as Friday...then the sun drops and all's still, apart from the mossies...crazy. Thought I'd try SunsetSnapper's technqiue tonight, reversing a 3-stop and a 2-stop nd grad (h) although I threw in a polariser for good measure and held the iso at 200 to get less movement on the reeds. It works for me, liking this...

Freaky red stripe sunset last night. Just got there in time for the afterglow, unfortunately it was breezy so not such a good reflection on the water. Also, should have used a polariser to take the glare off the reservoir, must try harder next time! 3-stop nd grad (h)

Ullswater, harsh mid afternoon light hand held. Not your arty 'sunlight through the mist' shot we all probably strive for however, I do rather like the simplicity and colour balance I managed to find here. When the sun shines in the Lakes it takes some beating!

Steps to my yacht...not...Saltend at sunset! An unorthodox set-up for this one, I needed the sharpest aperture (f/11) and the widest dynamic range (ISO 50) but needed a longish shutter speed to get the cloud movement; so shot using Bulb mode even though no Big Stopper. 3-stop nd grad (h) and a 2-stop nd grad

Two canon's on Low Wood hotel jetty last night, no idea why someone plonked the other one there! I've seen better sundowns but sometimes less is more. I didn't have time to make the more dramatic spots I was heading for but this one didn't turn out half bad. 3-stop nd grad (h) with the Big Stopper for just over 4 mins
