Another test shot from the D40x, this time with the Lee Big Stopper attached to flatten out the ripples in the water. Not quite sure if using the 10 stop ND is the way to go as I seem to have a lot of banding (especially apparent in this resized version) - I may have to try less stops or perhaps even adding a Hoya R72 to the front (not sure what that will do.....) if I want a LE shot. All good fun though - and I thought this was worth sharing.
Continuing the Infrared theme....this is a re-edit with a CWB preset in Lightroom, taken a few years ago with a Hoya R72 & Lee 0.6 Hard Grad. No selective colouring, just a channel swap. I much prefer this to the original. I love the way the IR has picked out the green algae on the rocks, if you've ever been to Porth Nanven you will know that these rocks can be slippery!
Another test shot from the converted D40x, this time with a Lee 0.9ND Proglass to flatten out the water. Not sure if the ND is in fact 3 stops in Infrared but it certainly allowed a long enough shutter to flatten out the water. This is as captured by the camera - slight S curve & contrast adjustment with a luminosity unsharp mask.
Many thanks to all the regulars who take the time to view and comment on my work, your kind words are really appreciated.

A test shot from my newly converted D40x using a piece cut from a Hoya R72 to replace the hot mirror. My sincere thanks goes to Julian Provis for his expertise in doing the conversion for me - check out his flickr stream and website www.julianprovis.co.uk.
The conversion means that I can capture Infra Red images without attaching a filter in front of the lens resulting in easier composition and shutter speeds that enable handheld shots. I will no doubt add the Lee Big Stopper to create some LE work on occasions.
ISO100,F8,1/200th - handheld.
Feeling Old? Well not as old as this ammonite, which could be anything between 65-240 million years old.
Ammonites are perhaps the most widely known fossil, possessing the typical ribbed spiral-form shell. They became extinct along with the dinosaurs. The name 'ammonite' (usually lower-case) originates from the Greek Ram-horned god called Ammon. Ammonites belong to a group of predators known as cephalopods, which includes their living relatives the octopus, squid, cuttlefish and nautilus.
Left for work a little bit earlier this morning at about 5.30am - got about 1/2 a mile and decided it wasn't a clever idea so I turned back and it took me about 30 minutes to retrace the 1/2 mile, it had snowed that much in that short time that I very nearly got stuck. Got home put the kettle on and lit the fire! School was closed - snowmen and snowball fight all done. This is from this morning taking the dog for a walk in the snow - he loved it, see comments for one from a few years back showing the same three trees.
Four Falls Trail, Powys, Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales. Taken a few weeks ago with a couple of friends, Ben Locke & Julian Provis.

Although I have been quiet on flickr recently I have enjoyed my photography over the last year. Since October 2011 I have tried to make time to visit sites within a few hours drive (not always easy with a young family and a limited budget) and I must thank Ben for starting the trend last autumn by taking me on my first visit to this location.

Since then Julian, Ben and I have been to numerous locations, got soaked, got cold, got our gear soaked, smashed some of our gear, lost some of our gear and along the way got some good shots. But more importantly have been able to get out and about and have a natter about "stuff" and generally put the world to rights!
A white Fallow Deer, Forest of Dean, illuminated in a shaft of late Autumn sun. If only that piece of bracken hadn't been there.....made the time to process and upload this one as I thought my regular viewers would appreciate it, also had the kids with me and we were all really excited to see the white deer back at this location after nearly 3 months of logging had forced them elsewhere since early spring.

Although I have been busy with a few other projects, and will be for the next month or so, I have been looking at all my regular contacts photostreams when I can, will be back soon!

Hoya R72 IR Filter F22 @ 140 seconds.

A new IR shot from the weekend, spent in lovely sunny South Wales with the family. Much happier with this one than the previous upload - and my ten year old son did a pretty good job at staying still for 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

Llansteffan Castle stands on a hill south of the village, overlooking the Tywi estuary. It was one of a chain of castles the Normans built to guard the river mouths in the early 12th century. But its history as a stronghold goes back much further, with the Norman castle taking advantage of the existing earthworks of an Iron Age hillfort. Like many other castles in the region its early history is marked by repeated attacks and capture by the Welsh. Late in the 12th century the castle came into the possession of William de Camville. The de Camvilles held Llansteffan until 1338, and during this time converted the castle into the stone fortress that remains today. They temporarily lost the castle to Welsh attacks in 1189, 1215 and 1257, but managed to regain the castle and repair and further develop the defences between each attack.
This shot shows the Inner Gate in the Upper Bailey and was at one stage in the castle’s history its main entrance, this three storied rectangular tower would have been connected to the curtain wall with a brief length of masonry topped by a wall-walk.

Another shot from the archives. I have uploaded a slightly different composition previously in B&W
but I like the colours in this and the more minimal feel without any headland. Slightly longer exposure in this one at 181 seconds to bleach out the sky.
Bossington beach is composed of a steeply shelving shingle bar that has extended across Porlock Bay. Exmoor National Park, Somerset.
