Today my friends wife called and said that in their terrace was lying some owl. At least she thought it was owl. Indeed it was. And a young Hawk Owl, born last summer - I think it must have come quite far away because in whole Lapland have been very poor owl year...

It had flown against window and collided it`s head. Thought to keep and try to feed it some days to see if it will survive...

Went back and found those nestlings I earlier tried to find. Two of them were sitting just near the nest....and adults were again looking carefully after them.

At least hundreds of hawk owls nest this year in northern Finland. Some of them nesting also here. Tried today find nestlings of this owl. Bad luck. I think they were somewhere there in the field. Male (in the pic) attacked couple of times so close that I felt it`s wing to touch my cap.

After for a really too long time went out...and for a search of Hawk Owls. Luckily found two and ringed this young bird born in 2010. Nature and winter is on it`s best. Sun almost warmed some today. Though it was quite cold...about -20 C....

I always make my pics to the big size...so if You have time, take a look as big....

Again but I think last time this year...Hawk Owl. Owlets have learned to fly. All ones below could fly at least 50 meters. Biotop where they nest are in most cases not so nice to the eye. Landscape where trees have been taken away etc....

It`s about the time hawk owl youngsters leave their nests. Unable to fly they crawl in the ground and climb skillfully to the trees and stubs with the help of sharp nails and short growing wings. We found yesterday 5 of 6 nestlings about 10 - 100 meters from their nest tree. Took some pics in bad cloudy weather...

The dark spot on the right upper corner is mother guarding in the background...

Middle sized owl that nests in good vole years in Northen Finland. Found also this pairs nest today...

Photograph has the ability to lie more than thousand words, or at least photos are just framing`s from something bigger that one has chosen for his purposes whatever. If You would look this in a bigger frame this wouldn`t look as nice or the bird as brave and selfconcious:

Friend of mine found today two nesting pairs of Hawk Owl. In this place at least three youngsters had left the nest. We couldn`t decide from which tree they had left cos there were so many possibilities. Logging place after ploughing looked more something after World War Three than piece of pretty nature of my country. There on stumps and in the middle of branches we found three owl-youngsters, still unable to fly - in what shape they use to leave nest.

BTW, this bird is hiding, it tries to be as thin as it can, and when one walks around it, it turns all time to that direction...and believes it had not been noticed.

Eastern species that in just some few years nests numerous in my home area. Wanders around taiga after voles it chases mostly sitting in high trees. Notices little voles movements on snow from very far. I`ve seen this happen from 1 kilometers distance.

Nests in trees, mostly in old holes dig up by those big Black Woodpeckers (Dryocopus martius), sometimes on top of the broken trees.

Taking head off makes cleaning and ordering of feathers easier.

- Eh, just happen to take a pick at the moment it turned head. So there is no damage nor manipulating done.
