The Waning Crescent Moon is just one day before new Moon. Below and to the left you will find planet Mars. And the Pleiades cluster is on the top left. A difficult sight in the glow of dawn but visible to the naked eye this was a beautiful conjunction.

A panorama taken a few minutes before sunrise with Venus shining on the left side of the photo. The red ribbon at the horion is produced by sunlight from below the horizon.

The body of water is not an ocean or sea but a river and the city skyline on the right is Buenos Aires.

Airglow at the Milky Way

A strong display of airglow just above the waters of Rio de La Plata with the Milky Way rising above.

Airglow is produced by chemiluminescence in the high atmosphere and, contrary to the aurora,it can be seen all over the world. It's usually not visible to the naked eye and always looks green in photos.

Conjunction and Optical Illusion

The Moon, two planets, many stars, a globular cluster and two satellites in the same shot, sometimes everything happens at the same time.

Spica, the Moon, Saturn, Zubenelgenubi and Venus are aligned in a diagonal line (the ecliptic) on the left side of the frame. You can check the ecliptic inclination at this time of the year.

The bright stars Alpha and Beta Centauri can be seen above the city and the globular cluster Omega Centauri is also visible following Beta to the left. This is the brightest cluster in the sky and can be seen with the naked eye as a diffuse star but is actually composed of millions of stars in a tight gravitic knot.

Finally if you see the horizon bulging where the Moon casts its reflection then you are looking at an optical illusion, the horizon is perfectly flat if you zoom into the photo. The sky also looks darker above the reflection but that's not real, cover up the reflection with a paper and you'll see how the illusion disappears. Tricky brain of ours....

A close approach between bright Venus and Regulus at dawn, plenty of stars can be seen from Leo and other constellations even when the sky is already bright.

Venus is bright enough to cast a reflection on the water, even at dawn!

With this photo Venus starts a series of close approaches to Regulus until totally occulting the star in the year... 2044!

The "Blue" Moon of August 31st 2012 rising above Rio de La Plata at Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Moon looked very red and distorted by the atmosphere a beautiful sight for the 2nd full moon in the month.

The Milky Way above the landscape. A bright cone of zodiacal light can be seen on the right. Several sources of light pollution are also visible.To the left the Parana River.

The photo shows how high the central part of the Milky Way, our galactic center, can be in the winter as seen from the South Hemisphere. On July and August the brightest part of the Milky Way is almost overhead.

From the South Hemisphere Andromeda (M31) never gets very high in the sky making it a difficult target. On a clear night it can be spotted with the naked eye near the horizon but it's always a challenge.

The conjunction in a wide angle view, you will recognize Orion on the right and next is Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. You can compare the brightness of the Moon, Venus and Jupiter against Sirius.

The full moon of July is named "Thunder Moon" or "Buck Moon" this photo shows the full moon just rising above Rio de La Plata at the coast of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A mirage produced by atmospheric distortion creates the omega shape that is also visible for sunsets or sunrises when the conditions are right.

There're some birds in the photo :)
