Moonset with Jupiter

A two days old waxing crescent moon setting in the twilight and a last glimpse to Jupiter before it gets too close to the Sun to see it. Jupiter's moons can be seen in the photo even in this wide view. Check Jupiter's Moons in the large version.

Dawn on the Moon

The terminator area of a waxing crescent Moon. The oblique position of the light makes several small features visible like little domes, rilles and craters.

Messier crater is clearly visible with comet-shaped rays.

Conjunction and Optical Illusion

The Moon, two planets, many stars, a globular cluster and two satellites in the same shot, sometimes everything happens at the same time.

Spica, the Moon, Saturn, Zubenelgenubi and Venus are aligned in a diagonal line (the ecliptic) on the left side of the frame. You can check the ecliptic inclination at this time of the year.

The bright stars Alpha and Beta Centauri can be seen above the city and the globular cluster Omega Centauri is also visible following Beta to the left. This is the brightest cluster in the sky and can be seen with the naked eye as a diffuse star but is actually composed of millions of stars in a tight gravitic knot.

Finally if you see the horizon bulging where the Moon casts its reflection then you are looking at an optical illusion, the horizon is perfectly flat if you zoom into the photo. The sky also looks darker above the reflection but that's not real, cover up the reflection with a paper and you'll see how the illusion disappears. Tricky brain of ours....

Three Planets and a Double Star [Annotated]

Three planets are aligned over the imaginary ecliptic line at dawn: Saturn, Venus and Mercury.

In the Middle the double star Zubenelgenubi can be seen. This star is a double and if you zoom in the photo you can see both components (cool!).

Mercury is usually a difficult observation but on a morning without clouds and excellent transparency it was very easy to see it with the naked eye.

The Waning Crescent Moon is always a welcomed guest in planetary conjunctions.

Is it possible to photograph a nebula before the sky is dark, with the Moon nearby and clouds in the middle? Short answer yes!

The amazing sensitivity of modern cameras makes this task possible. In the photo you can clearly see the Lagoon Nebula (M8) close to planet Mars with the Moon very close and before the sky was totally dark.

The Triffid nebula (M20) can be spotted too and with some careful examination the globular cluster M22 is visible.

The halo around the Moon, a corona, indicates the presence of thin clouds in the atmosphere.

The band of the Milky Way can be seen very faintly too across the image.

The Moon with just 1 day of age (1.03) only 1.6% illuminated. This was easy to spot with the naked eye if you know exactly where to look.

Venus, Regulus and the Moon

Venus is below the waning crescent Moon, to the left of the Moon you will find Regulus the brightest star of Leo. With some visual references many bright stars can be seen with the naked eye even with the glow of twilight. Regulus was very easy using the Moon as a reference point.

A vertical panorama showing the waxing crescent moon above the salt flats.

The red color in the salt is produced by "Artemia" a brine shrimp

The glow at the horizon is produced by the sun below the horizon as I was pointing west after sunset.

Earthshine on a 2 Days Old Moon

The near side of the Moon illuminated by the Sun and the reflected light from. Taken when the Moon was 2 days old waxing crescent.

At the limb you can see how mountains on the Moon are lit by the sun appearing as bright dots of light against earthshine.

The light reflected from Earth is bright enough to see many craters and lunar features, they can even be seen with the naked eye if you have good eyes.

Quadruple Conjunction

On August 21th 2012 Mars, Spica and Saturn formed an equilateral triangle and the Waxing Crescent Moon joined the conjunction just half a degree to the left of Spica.

It was a beautiful sight to the naked eye.
