Derek Vickers, 85 from Leeds, is urging veterans to take up the offer to apply for funding. He went on a Heroes Return visit to Italy last September, to revisit the country he first saw during his time with the Merchant Navy. He joined up in 1943 when he was aged just 16.

Former Wren Wendy Hogarth, 89, from Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, is about to take her first trip through the Heroes Return 2 programme, visiting Arbroath, Scotland.

Wendy joined the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm and was trained as a radar mechanic, testing equipment for aircraft. Credit - Dan James

Reg Downes, 91, joined the Territorial Army in 1938. Called up at the outbreak of war he joined the Middlesex Regiment, aged just 17 before volunteering in the Army Commandos. He recently revisited Salerno, Italy. Credit - David Devins.

Margaret Miller, 88, from Glasgow, made a very special trip back to Colombo in Sri Lanka last year. After VJ Day, on 2 September 1945, Margaret and many other WRENs looked after Allied soldiers and families who had been Japanese prisoners of war. Credit - David Brown

John Murtagh of Banbridge, Northern Ireland, was part of the Royal Army Service Corps that supported the allied offensive as it made its way across Europe during 1944 and 1945, landing on Normandy's Sword Beach shortly after D-Day.

He received a grant from the Heroes Return 2 programme to return to Normandy last year, and it proved an emotional experience. “I could see it all,” said John. “I could see the faces of our friends. It was upsetting, but I am glad I went back,” says John, a quiet man who denies he is a hero. Credit - Brian Morrison

Veteran Ron Veitch, 88, from Billingham in Teesside is about to make his first visit under the Heroes Return 2 programme and is urging other veterans to apply for funding for a first or second trip. Ron is visiting Malta, where his ship HMS Glasgow was repaired after being bombed by Italian aircraft in the Mediterranean. Ron was a Petty Officer on board the cruiser. Credit - Steve Brock

RAF veteran Norman Shepherd, 88, from Nottingham, visited Norway on a Heroes Return visit. He joined the RAF in 1943 and after training joined 196 Squadron 38 Group. The Flight Sergeant was a flight engineer in Short Stirlings in operations over occupied Europe. Credit - Alan Fletcher

Second World War flight commander Keith Quilter, from Kent, visited the Imperial War Museum Duxford in Cambridgeshire to not only celebrate his 90th birthday, but also the news that through the Big Lottery Fund’s (BLF) Heroes Return 2 programme, he has been awarded £3,700 to make a commemorative visit to Japan in May.

Keith, the 50th successful applicant of the BLF Heroes Return 2 programme to visit Japan, will to visit the grave of his best friend and cabin mate, Walter Stradwick, from aircraft carrier HMS Formidable, who was killed, aged 22, on 18 July 1945.
