Portrait of one Gille without mask. The "Gilles" are most important personages of the Carnival of Binche, a small medieval town in the southwest of Belgium. One thousand "Gilles" dance in the streets of the town the Mardi Gras (Shrove Tuesday) from dawn to late night.

This Carnival of Binche is the most famous carnival of Belgium and has been declared Patrimony of the Humanity by the UNESCO in 2003.
