Isla Contoy is a small island in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, approximately 30 kilometers north of Isla Mujeres. The island is only 8.5 km in length and has an area of 3.17 square kilometres. Since 1961, Isla Contoy is protected by the Mexican government and declared a National Park in February 1998. Only a few tour companies have permission to bring the only at maximum 200 daily visitors to Isla Contoy. Visitors need to apply for permission to visit the island at the Park offices in Isla Mujeres or Cancún.

This image was my first Vertorama. I have re-processed it because Getty Images requested it for sale. A year ago many of you asked why the legs were cut-off. This was because of a fence between myself and the cow. It was physically impossible to frame the whole cow into the image. Although i was very hesitant of posting it here on flickr, it turned out to be one of my most popular images. Also i had fresh grass in my left hand .. check the right eye :))The distance between the lens and the nose of the cow is appr. 10 cm.
