This would actually be American fashion, possibly Schiaparelli or Schiaparelli-inspired, as Twelvetrees had just arrived in Australia. As a minor film star, she was pleased to be feted and treated as a great star wherever she went here, and women probably went home planning a frock with those sleeves, but perhaps for winter and not a Sydney December!

Note: The band entered Sydney Harbour playing their newly composed "Australian Stomp" on deck, with their dancers performing. After good reviews, the Truth newspaper organised for the band to be raided. They were found with Australian women and deported. African American bands were banned from visiting until 1954. The Library has photographs of the Louis Armstrong tour, the first Afro-American entertainer to visit after the ban was lifted, and of the Harlem Blackbirds in 1955, the first Afro-Amercian group to visit.

Sydney Exposures book and exhibition caption: Roller Gliding, Sydney, 17 March 1937 : The gala opening of the Palladium, in William Street, saw the introduction of 'Roller gliding', a Hollywood version of roller skating to music. The theatre advertised 'dainty lady partners available'.
