Conservation Technician Stacey Kirby begins carving the mummy form out of 5 planks of Ethafoam adhered together with hot glue. (Golden Boy supervises in the background.) Measurements for the mummy form are based on the shape of the individual gilded mummy coverings.

Conservation Technician Stacey Kirby secures supports to mummy. The pectoral and apron gilded coverings have been attached to the supports by the Chief Conservator Bill Brown with Japanese tissue tabs that are adhered at the back with a reversible adhesive. Holes are made in the mummy through the fabric with an awl. Numerous painted brass pins secure each support to the mount. Each pin was handmade by Head Production Technician Rand Esser.

NCMA's Conservation Technician Stacey Kirby creates an Ethafoam
cradle based on the shape of the gilded apron. These cradles will be essential for creating carbon fiber fabric supports for the large gilded mummy coverings. Each carbon fiber fabric support will be stiffened with layers of epoxy resin and covered in felt and fabric.

Golden Boy's mummy stands upright for the first time. Head Production Technician Rand Esser created a block with a threaded rod that supports the form from within. Now we must create a head for his helmet.

The mount will be attached to the backboard in the case with hardware in (5 inches x 5 inches) the hole in the chest of the mummy. The pectoral gilded covering will cover the hole once installed.

Art handlers Lee Allen Wells and Drew Robertson assist with fitting Golden Boy's helmet mask to his Ethafoam support. Once the final adjustments are made, the entire mummy form will be covered in a layer of felt and knit fabric.

Conservation Technician Stacey Kirby arranges the supports for the apron and pectoral pieces on the mummy form. The supports are constructed of layers of carbon fiber fabric cover in felt and knit fabric. The placement and shape of the supports will dictate the shape of the mummy.

Conservation Technician Stacey Kirby presents Mini-Mummy-Me (a.k.a mount mock-up) to NCMA's team of designers, conservators, curators and production technicians. Numerous discussions related to conservation issues and mount research preceded the creation of the mummy for our Golden Boy. Conversations with conservators at the Brooklyn Museum of Art proved quite fruitful for determining our approach.
