This is as sunny as it gets here on this time of year. Looks beautiful with the snow, I think. I spent Christmas here in this village with my family, we had a nice time there. The population of Sørvágur is around 1000, which is one third of the island Vágar's population. Sørvágur is located just west of Vágar Airport, which is the only airport of the Faroe Islands. Vágar island is connected with Streymoy island with a subsea tunnel. Tórshavn is the capital of the Faroe Islands, it is located on Streymoy island. It takes around 50 minutes to drive by car from Sørvágur to Tórshavn, depending on how much traffic is of course.

I took this photo on 22 July 2010 from a place called Eggjarnar, just south of my home town Vágur. The cliff furthest south is Beinisvørð (Beinisvord), the second highest sea cliff of the Faroe Islands and the 9th highest sea cliff of Europe (according to Wikipedia): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliffs

A road was made to this place during Second World War when they made a Loran C station here, it was in function until mid 1970'ies. There are some ruins from the war up here. The road stops only 25 meters from the edge. The view is breathtaking.

Lítla Dímun is the smallest of the 18 islands of the Faroes. It measures 0,82 km2 (less than 100 hectares / 250 acres). Lítla Dímun has not been populated, but sometimes people have had to stay there for several days, because of the weather conditions or because of boat accidents. In 1918 The Danish schooner Caspe went shipwreack there and the crew had to stay on the island for 17 days before they were found and rescued by a fishing boat. They found a cabin on the island with matches, fuel and a lamp, they catced two sheep and could survive. Source of this story: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%ADtla_D%C3%ADmun

This photo was taken on a trip from Tórshavn to Stóra Dímun on 1 August 2010 with the schooner Norðlýsið. I have only been there once. Beautiful green island. 8 people live there. Their ancestors settled here in 1807. People have been living on the islands for more than 1000 years. Stóra Dímun is one of the smallest of the 18 islands in the Faroe Islands and one of the southernmost, it is located between two other small islands: Lítla Dímun, which is not inhabited and Skúvoy. It is also near Suðuroy, the southernmost island and Sandoy. I live in Suðuroy, and every time I go to the capital Tórshavn, I pass by Stóra Dímun.

The families website: www.storadimun.fo/

They are one family or perhaps I should say two, father and daughter are both farmers there. Óla Jákup úr Dímun is the farmer, but his daughter is about to take over, he told me. He is my 2nd cousin by the way, my father and his mother were cousins, they passed away a few years ago. Our common ancestors are from Sandvík, the northernmost village in Suðuroy. I have never meet this part of the family before on this trip. I didn't meet his daughter, they were all very busy with so many visitors at the same time of course, and I was exhausted after the hiking trip up the steep hill. We got waffles and coffee and tea from them, it was part of our trip.

Fugloy is one of the small islands of the Faroe Islands, located in the north-eastern corner of the Faroes in the island group Norðoyggjar (Northern Islands). The easternmost point of the Faroe Islands is a sea stack Stapin just east of Fugloy. The population is decreasing year by year on this island as well as on other remote islands. There are two villages on this island: Kirkja and Hattarvík. The total population of the island is only 39 (as of 1 January 2011). There is ferry connection 1-2 times daily and helicopter service too.

My grandfather came from this village.

I took these photos one year ago on an excursion. Tomorrow we will go to another island of the Northern Islands, the long and slim one which is called Kallsoy. The Northern Islands (Norðoyggjar) are: Kallsoy, Kunoy, Borðoy, Viðoy, Svínoy and Fugloy. The second largest town of the Faroe Islands, Klaksvík, is located on Borðoy.

View from Hólinum in Porkeri towards Baglholmur and Siglifelli Mountain, Suduroy, Faroe Islands

I took this photo yesterday morning at 9 o'clock from the village Porkeri, where my mother comes from. I live five km futher west along the fjord Vágsfjørður in Vágur. The fjord starts in Porkeri. The light was so beautiful, but it was quite windy, as one can guess by looking at the breaking waves on this photo. Baglholmur is a small islet just outside Víkarbyrgi, which used to be a village, but has been deserted now.

Wikimapia.org says about Baglholmur:
Its name is said to come of the Irish word ‘bachall’ that means ‘crosier’. Irish monks are said to have lived here even before the arrival of the Norse.
