Chipperfield Circus caravans, Town Moor, Newcastle

Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums posted a photo:

This image shows a neat row of stylish 1950's caravans parked up on the Town Moor in Newcastle in September 1952.
These were the homes of the circus showmen and women and their families travelling and working with the Chipperfield Circus. If you look closely you can see that these caravans have stained glass windows.

Accession: 944/2958

The images have been selected from the Arthur J Fenwick collection of circus material.
Arthur James Fenwick (1878-1957) was a director of Fenwick's Department Store. In his personal life he was extremely interested in fairs and circuses, collecting historical material about them and building personal relationships with showmen who visited Newcastle. He was made a life member of the Showmen's Guild in 1944.
