Mary, Queen of Scots, circa 1559–1560; the picture was painted by François Clouet before August 1560 (after the deaths of her father-in-law and mother, but before the death of her husband François II of France).

I was surprised when, at the entrance to the gallery, the guides suggested that I might like to take photos during my visit. They suggested it! What a change in policy. I wonder what brought that about.

The very best guided tour I have ever experienced - that's what the staff at Dumfries House provided. No barriers, no robes, and the feeling instead that you were being shown around someone's home rather than a museum.

This is the ferry that we travelled on from Craigryan to Larne at the start of the trip to Donegal. We passed it around half way across the channel. The island behind it is off the Scottish coast, and has a wonderful cliff on one side.

In the gardens at Blair Castle - we had a couple of heavy downpours, so the poppies weren't at their best, but the colour so vivified the garden that I had to take a photo
