Melbourne Integrated Rail and Tram Map

Melbourne, Australia, is blessed with extensive networks of both trams/light rail (30 routes over 250 km) and trains (over 200 stations). Melburnians use the two systems in tandem to get where they need to be, but I’ve never seen a decent integrated map of the two services, one that shows where they meet for travel planning. Since privatisation in the late 90s, the networks are run by separate entities so there’s little chance of an official one being produced anytime soon.

From the rail fan world, there’s a map at the Urban Rail website (www.urbanrail.net/au/melb/melbourne-map.htm), and this somewhat more successful one at the Australian Rail Maps website (www.railpage.org.au/railmaps/melbourn.htm). This latter map uses the general principles of the Beck/London Tube diagram (a different colour for each rail line, all lines restricted to 45 degrees angles, curved directional changes, and a general preference for design over exact physical location and scale). But it suffers from various design flaws and being laden with way too much information (possibly as a result of being a rail fan map). Both maps are plainly ugly.

For some unknown reason I decided to create a new map. I eventually settled on using the Australian Rail Maps creation as a base because they have at least taken the time to plot the tram network fairly accurately geographically (a requirement for a road based tram network where travellers depend on visual queues for location), and expertly interspersed it with the rail network. I amended it slightly here and there to better aid design and accuracy. But thanks and kudos to them for the original!
